Essen-Gerschede ( called Platt Gasche in Borbeck ) is a north-western district of the city of Essen , in which residential buildings with green spaces predominate. At the same time, it forms the smallest district in District IV.

history

The origin of the name Gerschede is derived from the spelling Gerscheide . This indicates a ger- or wedge-shaped sheath , the sheath denoting a part of the Markenwald that was reserved for a noble family. The village of Gerschede emerged along the Schmalenbecke stream, which rises in today's Mayskamp green area. In 1668 the former farm of the farmer May is mentioned here, making him one of the oldest known farms in the village. But the thorn vineyard is mentioned as early as 1406, which belonged to Hannes op der Hovestat, who sold it to an official of Abbess Elisabeth von Nassau that year. This estate gave the Donnersberg in neighboring Dellwig its name. In the former farming community of Gerschede, other buildings today remind of the village character that shaped this place for centuries. There is the half-timbered house from 1749 belonging to the Buckermannshof, which housed the former Beckermannshof restaurant and is now used for residential purposes. The Kerkmannshof from the 18th century and its servant house, the Schafenkampskotten, also called Zückerhüsken, built around 1800, also bear witness to this. At the corner of Münstermannstraße and Gerscheder Straße there is a small, listed half-timbered Marienhäuschen from 1784, called the Shepherd's Chapel. The Pausmühlenhof of the Paus family was located on the Pausmühlenbach. The Pausmühle, a grain mill, was first operated by the stream, later with gas and from 1939 electrically. It was shut down in 1970. The Pausmühlenbach, which forms the border with Borbeck , once ran through swampy terrain and was dammed up to form a pond at Möllhoven. The Vossgätters Mühle, also called Aumühle, stands in a valley basin, albeit in the Borbeck area. The abbesses of the Essen Abbey had grain ground here, which was to be paid off as tithe .

In 1847 the line of the Cologne-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft was built. In addition, on December 1, 1872, the railway line between Heißen and Frintrop was opened for freight traffic. Both lines cut the village.

Nordlandhaus in the Nordlandring

In the period that followed, Gerschede lost its purely rural character more and more because of the rapidly advancing industrialization through mining and steel industry in neighboring towns and as a result of the associated heavy immigration of workers. Some workers' settlements emerged, such as the Arenberg Colony. In 1939 a late Krupp settlement was built, the street names of which are reminiscent of the former colony of German East Africa : Windhukweg, Samoastraße, Tangabucht and others.

After the Second World War , Norwegian European Aid built 25 prefabricated wooden houses in Gerschede in 1954/55 to accommodate large families. In memory of this generous donation from Norway , the streets on which these Nordland houses stand are named Nordlandaue and Nordlandring . Although many of these houses have been changed over time through additions and renovations according to the wishes of the residents and have not yet been subject to monument protection, their basic architectural structure is still recognizable as northern country houses even after more than 60 years .

Territories

In the Middle Ages, the courtyards as so-called Unterhöfe in the Oberhof Borbeck, mostly in kind, were subject to tax. After the women's monastery in Essen was founded by the Bishop of Hildesheim Altfrid in 852 , the Essen abbess was legally assigned the Oberhof Borbeck by Archbishop Gunthar of Cologne in 860 . In 1288, the Oberhof became the property of the women's monastery, so that the abbess as such received the spiritual and, raised as imperial duchess, also the secular saga about Borbeck and thus also Gerschede. In the course of secularization , the monastery was dissolved in 1803, so that the territory first came to Prussia .

In 1808 Bedingrade went to the newly established Rhine department of the French satellite state Grand Duchy of Berg . After the reorganization of Europe by the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Bedingrade came to the now Prussian mayor's office Borbeck , which then belonged to the Essen district founded on April 23, 1816 . After its dissolution in 1823, Bedingrade belonged to the Duisburg district as part of the mayor's office until 1859 , then from 1859 to the newly established Essen district. In addition to Gerschede, the mayor's office also included Bedingrade , Bochold , Dellwig , Frintrop and Schönebeck , including Vogelheim at the time, as well as the Lippern ( Lipper Heide ) and Lirich farming communities . With these last two parts, the Borbeck mayor's office suffered its greatest loss of territory on February 1, 1862. From this point on, these districts formed around two thirds of the newly founded municipality of Oberhausen . The three-tier district, consisting of Altendorf , Frohnhausen and Holsterhausen , was also assigned to the Borbeck municipality after secularization , but was spun off again as an independent mayor of Altendorf in 1874. Gerschede belonged to Borbeck's mayor until 1915, when it was incorporated into the city of Essen. Within Essen, Gerschede is now part of Borbeck District IV .

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Gerschede

Blazon : "In silver (white) a green tip, covered with a silver (white) booze pen ."

The coat of arms was designed by Kurt Schweder and never had an official character. At the end of the 1980s, the heraldist created coats of arms for all of Essen's districts. They have meanwhile been well received by the Essen population.

Meaning: Gerschede comes from "Gertschede", as it was documented in 1220 in a small Vogteirolle . In other sources, the name suggests a wedge-shaped sheath. The coat of arms is a so-called " talking coat of arms "; the spearhead (here a boar pen) stands for "Ger" and the green tip for "schede".

Today's character

Gerschede is mainly characterized by residential developments. The next medium- sized center is Borbeck-Mitte . The district has both an evangelical (community center Samoastraße of the evangelical parish Dellwig-Frintrop-Gerschede) and a Catholic parish in the St. Paulus parish church, completed in 1956. This was already consecrated on July 10, 1955 by the Cologne Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Ferche . Striking in the image of the district is the Krupp settlement, which was completely refurbished between 2002 and 2006, and the settlement between Möllhoven and Ackerstraße. A cycle path on the Pausmühlbach connects Gerschede with the nearby castle park in Borbeck-Mitte. The Borbeck comprehensive school has been located on Hansemannstrasse, named after Adolph Hansemann , a banker and colonial politician, since 1991. In addition, the Gerschede elementary school has existed in Ackerstrasse since 1988.

The tram - stop food Gerschede offers with the line S9 a direct connection to Wuppertal on the city center and to Haltern am See on Bottrop . The tram line 103 and the bus lines 143, 185 and 186, as well as the night express NE12 of the Ruhrbahn run through Gerschede.
