The Estádio Dom Afonso Henriques ( German Dom Afonso Henriques Stadium ) is a football stadium in the Portuguese city of Guimarães . The facility is the home ground and property of the Vitória Guimarães football club . It was after the first Portuguese king I. Alfons named. The sports facility designed by the architect Eduardo Guimarães has a capacity of 30,165 spectators.
history
The stadium in the former Portuguese capital was built in 1965. Even then, the complex had a horseshoe shape that is still recognizable today. A first modernization took place in the run-up to the Junior World Cup in Portugal in 1991 . Overall, the Estádio Dom Afonso Henriques was the venue for four World Cup matches, including a semi-final. It was rebuilt and modernized for the 2004 European Football Championship . Vitória Guimarães and 1. FC Kaiserslautern played the opening game afterwards (4-1). The venue was the venue for two group matches of the 2004 European Championships. The new stadium was officially reopened on July 25, 2003. Since it is located in the city center of Guimarães, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO , the entire environment had to be taken into account during the redesign.
On January 25, 2004, a tragic accident occurred in the stadium. In the second half of the league game between Vitória Guimarães and Benfica Lisbon , Benfica's Hungarian international Miklós Fehér collapsed on the field with cardiac arrest . After attempting resuscitation, Fehér died on the way to the hospital. According to a report by the Portuguese judiciary, he died of a heart attack .
At the U-21 European Football Championship in 2006 , the stadium was the venue for two preliminary round matches. Germany lost the games against France and hosts Portugal. Portugal scored the decisive goal to make it 1-0 in the fourth minute of stoppage time. As a third party you were eliminated because of the worse goal difference. The FC Paços de Ferreira used the stadium for its home games in the group stage of the 2013-14 UEFA Europa League , as the Estádio da Mata Real not with around 6,500 seats with the requirements of UEFA met.
The Estádio Dom Afonso Henriques, alongside the Estádio do Dragão in Porto, hosted the Final Four of the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League .
