Evangelical Reformed Church of the Canton of Friborg
The Evangelical Reformed Church of the Canton of Friborg ( French : Eglise Evangélique Réformée du canton de Friborg) is the Reformed cantonal church in the Swiss canton of Friborg . She is a member of the Evangelical Reformed Church in Switzerland and the Conférence des Eglises protestantes romandes (CER).
history
The canton of Friborg is traditionally Catholic. Due to the joint rule of Friborg and Bern over the Murten region , it was possible for the communities of Murten, Kerzers , Môtier , Meyriez and Ferenbalm to decide in favor of the Reformation in 1530 .
Due to reformed immigrants, the first diaspora community in the canton was founded in the city of Friborg in 1836 . After the state was founded in 1848, immigration from the surrounding Reformed cantons of Bern and Vaud continued to increase. Conditions, especially in the Sense district , were bad for the newcomers. The fathers refused to send their children to the Catholic village schools. The first reformed schools were founded on the initiative of pastors in Bern , for example in Weissenstein , Berg and Kessibrunnholz.
In 1854, the Grand Council of the Canton of Friborg passed a church law for the first time, which also affected the Reformed Church. Violent disputes shaped the transfer of the previously privately organized municipality of Freiburg to the new, state-prescribed structure. In particular, the supporters of the old order worried about their independence and the financial support from Bern, which up to now has made it possible to build up the parish and run the schools. The State Council, however, was determined to enforce the new order and commissioned Karl-Friedrich Chatoney , the chief magistrate of the lake district , to chair the first session of the synod on July 11, 1854 in Murten. In 1863 the Grand Council approved the establishment of the first Reformed parish in the Sense district , the parish of St. Antoni .
It was only in 1998 that the canton took over tax collection for the Reformed Church and thus put it on an equal footing with the Catholic Church . The parish of Sense, which emerged from the parish of St. Antoni - at that time the largest in the canton - was divided into five independent parishes on January 1, 1999 and in 2001 the parish of Romont - Châtel-St-Denis was divided .

management
The seat of the canton church, which is organized in two languages, is in Murten for historical reasons. The Synod has legislative power and the Synodal Council has the executive . Until 1991 both bodies were chaired by the President of the Synodal Council. This only changed after a motion by the parish of Bulle-Gruyère, which demanded a separate presidium for the synod and was accepted in 1990. Nicole Zimmermann was elected first Synod President on May 27, 1991.
