geography

Everglades City is laid out between the large wetlands in southern Florida and the coast of the Gulf of Mexico at Chokoloskee Bay. The city extends north-south along the Allen River, which in this area is split into Barron River and Lake Placid.

history

Everglades was founded by the first settled settlers in 1864 . The settlement along the Allen's River was named by Bermbery Storter in 1894 after the United States Postal Service rejected the name Chokoloskee . In 1923 Everglades became the seat of the newly formed Collier County. That same year, the first bank and newspaper , Collier County News, were installed in town. From 1928 to 1957 the place had a railway connection through the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad . The county's namesake, Barron G. Collier , bought most of the land in and around the city. Within five years, the sleepy town was transformed into an up-and-coming industrial city. Later, in 1948, the paper moved its editorial office to Naples. In 1953, Everglades was declared an Everglades City by law. Nine years later, Everglades City also lost the county seat to Naples. When Hurricane Wilma in October 2005, the city with the neighboring island of Chokoloskee was the hardest hit area in southwest Florida.

Everglades City has a small airport as a connection to the outside world, but it is also the location of seaplanes that offer sightseeing flights. The community is connected to the road network via State Route 29 . This leads through the swamps to the north. After six kilometers, the route is linked to US Highway 41 . This so-called Tamiami Trail runs parallel to the eponymous canal from Naples in the west to the east coast to the agglomeration around Miami . The 29 leads south to the island of Chokoloskee , where the road ends. The extensive network of waterways enables tours with canoes and other water sports vehicles.
