The FIA GT3 European Championship was a motorsport series for Gran Turismo vehicles of the GT3 class. It was launched in 2006 by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile and the SRO Motorsports Group in order to create a new entry-level class under the FIA GT Championship with cheaper technical regulations . Most of the vehicles were specially built according to the GT3 regulations. However, there were also modified cup vehicles from the Porsche Supercup , national Porsche Carrera Cups , the Ferrari Challenge or the Trofeo Maserati . In 2012 the series was discontinued.
Sporting regulations
In order to take part in the championship, a racing team consisting of two vehicles of the same vehicle type had to register two drivers per racing car. All participating drivers were divided into four categories after testing their previous careers, with the classification ranging from platinum, for professional drivers in internationally recognized racing series such as Formula 1 , through gold and silver to amateurs with little or no racing experience in the bronze category. Since the racing series was mainly advertised for private drivers, pilots in the Platinum category were not permitted, and purely professional driver pairings in the Gold category were prohibited. All remaining combinations were allowed. Points were awarded according to the scheme 25, 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1 for drivers and teams. Championship titles were awarded to teams and drivers. In addition, the best pilots of each vehicle were honored with separate awards.
In addition to practice sessions, a race weekend consisted of two qualifications and two 60-minute races. The driver with a lower ranking had to take part in the first qualification and was also the starting driver for the first race. If both drivers belonged to the same category, the team could choose. The remaining teammate took part in the second qualification and had to complete the first stint in the second championship run. In both races, each vehicle had to complete a mandatory pit stop between the 23rd and 37th minute. A driver change had to be made. From arrival to departure, the entire process could not be completed below the minimum time set depending on the route. Refueling and changing tires were prohibited in the race and during qualifying sessions. An exception to the rule for a tire change was a tire damage or a change in the weather reported by the race management. All service work was also allowed to be carried out by a maximum of two mechanics.

Brand cups (2006-2010)
In addition to the actual European championship, one-make cups were also held in the same races between 2006 and 2010 , but here only the first four drivers received points in the brands' classification. Therefore, after each race, the best placed drivers of each vehicle type were honored on the podium and listed in separate championship tables.
