The Cranberries (Eng. "The Cranberries ") were an Irish rock group . The band was formed in Limerick in 1989 under the name The Cranberry Saw Us . In 1995 she achieved her international breakthrough with the album No Need to Argue . The most successful song Zombie is about the Northern Ireland conflict . According to the sources, they have sold more than 25.1 million records in their careers. The band's most successful release is the album No Need to Argue, with around 12.9 million units sold.

occupation

When the band was still operating under the name The Cranberry Saw Us , it consisted of Noel and Mike Hogan, Fergal Lawler and the then lead singer Naill Quinn. After leaving in 1990, he recommended the group Dolores O'Riordan as a singer, whereupon she was recorded in May of the same year. Shortly thereafter, they renamed themselves The Cranberries . Since this reshuffle of the singers, the constellation remained unchanged until the temporary dissolution in 2003. In 2009 there was a reunification with the old line-up. Front woman Dolores O'Riordan died on January 15, 2018.

history

founding

1989 founded the two brothers Noel and Michael Hogan from Limerick (Ireland) with the drummer Fergal Lawler and the singer Niall Quinn the band called The Cranberry Saw Us ("The cranberry saw us"). Dolores O'Riordan later replaced the singer and gave the band the typical cranberry sound. They recorded a demo tape, which already brought them some fans in their home country and which was also well received by the critics.

Ascent

After a record label battle , the band signed a deal with Island Records , but quit their manager after their first unsuccessful single. Their second single Linger and their debut album Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? but became the first hits for The Cranberries in the UK and the United States. The third single Dreams reached number 14 in the US. On July 18, 1994, Dolores O'Riordan married Don Burton, who shortly thereafter also became the tour manager of the Cranberries.

In the same year, the Cranberries recorded the album No Need to Argue , which made them even more popular in Europe and the USA. It contains the song Zombie , a protest against the violence between Catholic and Protestant extremists in Northern Ireland. With this release they reached the height of their commercial careers. On February 14, 1995, they made an appearance on MTV Unplugged at the Brooklyn Academy of Music .

Amid rumors of O'Riordan's imminent farewell, The Cranberries released the album To the Faithful Departed in 1996 , which, however, did not match the success of its predecessor. In the years that followed, the group canceled a major tour, which helped spread rumors of a breakup. In 1999 the album Bury the Hatchet was released .

With the 2001 album Wake Up and Smell the Coffee , The Cranberries seemed to be more successful again. A DVD that was released on the market at the same time as the Best Of CD in 2002 won a Best Video award.

Dissolution in 2003

The sixth album of the Cranberries should be released in 2004. During the 2003 summer tour they played the new titles In It Together and Astral Projection as the opening act for the Rolling Stones .

However, in September 2003, The Cranberries split after over a decade of existence. O'Riordan's mother-in-law was seriously ill and passed away shortly afterwards. The singer was not able to continue working under these circumstances.

O'Riordan later sang the theme song Ave Maria for the film The Passion of the Christ . Noel Hogan's new project is the band Arkitekt (formerly: Mono Band ). Fergal Lawler played drums in the short-lived band The Low Network .

New start in 2009

The Cranberries 2010 in Barcelona

Despite constant denials of all rumors about a start-up, it was announced in late 2007 that the band intended to work on an album or an EP that would contain the songs from the unreleased sixth album. On August 11, 2008, a video was published on the official website of O'Riordan on the Internet portal Myspace , which announced a "New beginning" as well as a new album and a world tour for 2009. On August 25, 2009, Dolores O'Riordan officially announced the reunion of the Cranberries and announced a tour that should start in November 2009. The release of the album was delayed, however, and in 2010 the tour off Italy that had already started was canceled due to illness. Some concerts on the tour, which was later resumed, were released as live CD. On the occasion of the Feis Festival tour in London on June 18, 2011, an unreleased song called Tomorrow could be too late was performed.

The Cranberries finally returned on February 24, 2012 with Roses , their first studio album in over ten years. The first release was the song Tomorrow . Was produced Roses by Stephen Street (The Smiths, Morrissey, Kaiser Chiefs, The Courteeners, Pete Doherty), the longtime friend and musical partner of the band. In 2017, Something Else, a new recording of their greatest hits, was released in collaboration with the Irish Chamber Orchestra . A planned European tour had to be partially canceled, the reason given was the singer's back problems. However, a concert in Berlin on May 2nd of that year took place.

On January 15, 2018, Dolores O'Riordan died unexpectedly in London at the age of 46.

Resolution 2019

In 2019 the band released their last album, In the End , for which Dolores O'Riordan had sung material before her death. A first title, All Over Now , was released in January 2019 . The band broke up after the release of their last album together.

"But the cranberries was the four of us. There's no reason to do it without Dolores. So we're going to leave it after this. "

“But The Cranberries, that was the four of us. There is no reason to go on without Dolores. So we'll stop after that. "

- Noel Hogan :

Music and lyrics

The lyrics and melodies were almost always written by Dolores O'Riordan, often with the help of Noel Hogan. Musically, the band covers a relatively wide range between pop , rock and Irish folk . In the beginning the style was more soft rock like for example with Dreams , later it became harder like for example with Zombie and towards the end of his career the tendency went slightly towards pop like for example with Analyze .

The lyrics are often about love, relationships or separation, but also about war and misery. For example, the Northern Ireland conflict with the Easter Rising is discussed in Zombie and the Balkan conflict in Bosnia . A few songs are also dedicated to specific people or places: The song Yeat's Grave is about the Irish poet William Butler Yeats and the island of Innisfree, which appears in the title of one of his poems. I Just Shot John Lennon deals with the murder of Beatles member John Lennon . The piece New New York is about the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 and Cape Town is about the South African metropolis Cape Town .

The Cranberries also covered a number of tracks including They Long to Be (Close to You) by Burt Bacharach and Hal David , Go Your Own Way by Fleetwood Mac , In the Ghetto by Mac Davis and the unreleased song Crazy by Patsy Cline .

Occur

The Cranberries appeared together with the bands The Rolling Stones and AC / DC , among others . O'Riordan was clearly the focus of the cranberries' appearances. The Cranberries always presented themselves politely in interviews and press conferences, although they were not always enthusiastic about the journalists' questions. For example, O'Riordan once commented: "It's like asking a mushroom if it would rather be a cucumber ..."

Regarding the appearance of the group: At first Fergal, Noel and Mike had long hair, while O'Riordan had short. From around 1994, the male members appeared with short hair, O'Riordan has often changed their hair length and color since then.

The concert behavior is most likely to be assigned to the alternative rock scene. Although the lighting was played with, the focus was always on the music. There was never any emphasis on backdrops or choreography. The extravagant dance style of Dolores O'Riordan was striking.
