The Riviera Airport (formerly Albenga Airport , IATA code : ALL , ICAO code : LIMG ) lies in the region of Liguria in northwest Italy . It is located on the Italian Riviera , in the section between Finale Ligure and Imperia , around seven kilometers west of Albenga , in the area of the municipality of Villanova d'Albenga .

use

The international airport Riviera Airport serves primarily for general aviation on the Riviera di Ponente and is the works airport of the Italian aircraft manufacturer Piaggio Aerospace . The 1.5 km long runway can be used by aircraft up to 60 tons takeoff weight. The Italian customs Agenzia delle Dogane is present at the airport. The Riviera Airport is well connected to the economic and tourist centers of the Italian and French Riviera by the Via Aurelia (SS1) and the A10 motorway. Monte-Carlo can be reached in under an hour's drive via the motorway, and a helicopter company based at the airport connects it with the principality.

history

In 1922, an airfield with a 900 meter long grass runway was opened in Villanova d'Albenga. In 1929 the Piaggio company set up a factory airfield here. In 1937, the piste was the first in Italy to have a macadam surface. In the years that followed, a hangar was built and barracks were added. After the military use in the Second World War , the war damage was repaired from 1946 and in 1947 the regular service to Rome was started. The airport was of somewhat greater importance at the time, as Genoa airport did not start operating until 1962. By 1968 all scheduled and charter flights were relocated to Genoa and Piaggio also moved. For the next thirty years, only general aviation used the Riviera Airport. From the summer of 1997, flights to Corsica , Sardinia and Rome could be offered again, but without economic success. In 2014, Piaggio Aerospace returned to Albenga from Genoa. In 2015, the public operators decided to privatize and sell the airport. The new owner plans to completely modernize the airport and make it usable exclusively as a service and home airport for private and business jets.
