The Football League Fourth Division 1986/87 was the 29th season of the fourth highest English football league . The top three clubs Northampton Town , Preston North End and Southend United rose directly to the Football League Third Division. The clubs in positions four to six played together with the fourth from bottom of the third division in play-off mode for fourth promotion place. This was secured by FC Aldershot .
With the introduction of automatic descent from the Fourth Division, Lincoln City suffered the second consecutive descent. He was replaced in the 1987/88 season by Scarborough FC , champions of the Football Conference .
