Friends is an album by the US music band The Beach Boys , which was recorded from February to April 1968.

History of origin

Brian Wilson produced most of the album and sang the lead on many songs. He wrote the songs together with the other Beach Boys. Dennis Wilson made his debut as a songwriter on this album. Little Bird and Be Still are collaborations between Dennis Wilson and the poet Steve Kalinich . Kalinich worked first with Dennis Wilson and later with his brother Brian on many songs, but only a few of them were released.

While working on this album, Mike Love was in India to receive an introduction to the teaching of Transcendental Meditation with Donovan and the Beatles . After his return he tried to get the other band members excited about this teaching, with all but Dennis Wilson and Bruce Johnston showing themselves to be receptive. Meant for you , Transcendental Meditation and Anne Lee, the Healer were born under this impression.

A subsequent tour was canceled because of the assassination attempt on Martin Luther King , a second with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the opening act was a financial failure.

reception

Friends did not sell well in the US. It did not make it into the top 100 of the Billboard charts and did not rise above # 126, after 10 weeks it had disappeared from the charts. The album is one of the quieter Beach Boys and was largely ignored by the audience and critics. It did quite well in the UK charts, moving up to # 13.

Despite the moderate success, Brian Wilson describes Friends today as one of his favorite albums: “ Pet Sounds is by far my very best album. Still, though, my favorite is Friends . "(" Pet Sounds is by far my best album. Still, my favorite album is Friends . ")

Song info

The title song was the only single release from the album. It reached number 47 in the charts and became the worst-placed single (apart from the rankings of the B-sides ) of the Beach Boys since 1962. The song is about the common past of the Beach Boys and is a waltz . The song was taken as an example at Berklee College of Music to show students how to compose songs in 3/4 time .

Wake the World was the first song Al Jardine and Brian Wilson wrote together.

Be Here in the Morning contains a verse that is sung with the falsetto voice. If you listen improperly, you might think that this is from Brian Wilson, who normally used this voice, but the lead voice in this piece comes from Alan Jardine , whose vocals have been accelerated. The line "No calls from Korthof, Parks or Grillo" refers to Brian's cousin Steve Korthof (also at times Wilson's personal assistant), the tour manager Jon Parks and Nick Grillo, lawyer and manager of the Beach Boys.

Little Bird is the first song that Dennis Wilson wrote and released. The text is from his friend and poet Stephen Kalinich. It's about a bird that Dennis was looking at from a window. According to Kalinich, the bridge of the song was written by Brian Wilson.

Busy Doin 'Nothin' is a bossa nova . The song is autobiographical and describes a day in the life of Brian Wilson. The song contains a rather vague description of the way to Brian Wilson's property in Bel Air , the starting point is also missing.

Diamond Head came from a session by Brian Wilson with his studio musicians who are also mentioned in the credits. During the re-recording of Brian Wilson presents Smile , it was rumored that this piece was a Smile snippet.

Transcendental Meditation is about transcendental meditation . Some Beach Boys, especially Mike Love and Al Jardine, had been followers of this form of meditation for a long time. They took up this theme again and again on later albums (e.g. All this is that , He came down , TM Song , etc.).
