A frost day is the meteorological-climatological term for a day on which the minimum air temperature is below 0 ° C. The measurements are taken in a standard weather hut at a height of two meters. However, if the maximum air temperature, the daily maximum temperature , is below 0 ° C on this day, it is also referred to as an ice day , whereby the frost days that are not ice days are referred to as frost change days . All other days, i.e. days on which the thermometer never sinks below freezing point, are called dew days - the term only makes sense for days in the winter half-year , or for high mountains and other permafrost areas .

Because the air temperature is measured two meters above the ground, a day with ground frost does not automatically count as a frost day, and conversely, ground frost does not prevail on every frost day when the sun is strong enough to thaw the surface or sublimate the ice cover .

Mostly the plural of frost days is used. Above all, this indicates the number of frost days for a certain period of time, usually a month, winter or year. The frost change days are the difference between frost and ice days. They are climatic parameters of a place or a special measurement period.

According to a farmer's rule, the ice saints are the last days in spring when a frost day can be expected.
