The 1996/97 season of the Bayernliga was the 52nd season of the Bayernliga soccer league and the third as the fourth highest division in Germany. The champions and climbers in the regional league were the amateurs of TSV 1860 Munich with nine points ahead of FC Memmingen . The Memminger reached the relegation round to the Regionalliga Süd , in which they failed in the replay against Kickers Offenbach . The amateurs of TSV 1860 Munich managed to march straight through from the Bavarian regional league via the Bavarian league to the regional league.
The relegation places occupied the FC Gundelfingen , the SV Alemannia Haibach and the VfB Helmbrechts . The SpVgg Bayreuth rose in the relegation round with the runner-up of the Bavarian State League as the fourth team.
The Würzburger Kickers , 1. SC Feucht and TSV 1860 Rosenheim rose as the respective season winners from the three seasons of the Bavarian State League . TSV Landsberg qualified as fourth climber via the relegation games . SG Quelle Fürth was relegated from the Regionalliga Süd .

Relegation round to the Bayern League
The tables 15. of the Bayern League and the runners-up of the three seasons of the Landesliga Bayern played another place in the Bayern League after the end of the season in the knockout system. The winners of the two semi-finals in a neutral place played out the participants in the Bavarian League in a final game - also in a neutral place.
In the games in Weiden in the Upper Palatinate, the Bavarian League representative SpVgg Bayreuth faced the runner-up of the Landesliga Staffel Mitte, SSV Jahn Regensburg, and the Landesliga vice-champions of the Staffeln Süd, TSV Landsberg, and Nord, Würzburger FV, in Ansbach on each other. SSV Jahn Regensburg and TSV Landsberg reached the final.

TSV Landsberg prevailed against SSV Jahn Regensburg in the final in Aichach 4-1. The Landsbergers were thus the fourth climber in the Bayern League, while Bayreuth was the fourth relegated to the Landesliga.
