The 1998/99 season of the Oberliga Hessen was the 21st season of the Football Oberliga Hessen and the fifth as the fourth-highest division in Germany. The champions and promoted to the regional league was SV Darmstadt 98 with one point ahead of SG 01 Hoechst . The Frankfurters from the Höchst district reached the promotion round to the Regionalliga Süd , in which they failed. The Darmstadt team was able to return directly to the regional league.

The only athletic relegation was FV Steinau . The SpVgg Bad Homburg withdrew their team due to financial difficulties after the 16th matchday from the current game operation. All games played so far have been canceled. The VfR Bürstadt failed in the relegation round against the runners-up in the national leagues and was thus the third relegated team.

KSV Baunatal , VfB Marburg and the second team from Kickers Offenbach rose from the three seasons of the Landesliga Hessen as the respective season winners. With the Offenbach championship in the Landesliga Staffel Süd, Germania Horbach automatically moved up as runner -up when a second team rose due to the regulations of the Hessian Football Association . The FSV Braunfels secured promotion as the fifth team via the relegation round. From the Regionalliga Süd , SC Neukirchen rose to the Oberliga Hessen.

The top scorer was Thomas Brendel from SG 01 Hoechst with 20 goals. The Oberliga Hessen consisted of 18 teams in the following season . With the promotion of the first team to the 2nd Bundesliga , the second team from Kickers Offenbach played with the addition of amateurs in the following season .

Relegation round to the league

For the remaining free place in the league, the table-14 played. the upper league, the two runners-up in the national league squadrons North and Middle and the third in the national league squadron south a relegation round. The group winners FSV Braunfels made it to the top league as the fourth team, while VfR Bürstadt, bottom of the table, was the fourth relegated to the state league.
