Gottberg (noble family)
The old noble family von Gottberg originated in the Mark Brandenburg . From there it spread to Mecklenburg (†), over the Neumark to Pomerania and on to Prussia .
history
middle Ages
The family was first mentioned in 1246 with Conradus de Gottgerge. This is said to come from Geestgottberg , the first house of the family, which however fell to the Noble Gans zu Wittenberge after 1300 . The next and subsequent generations until around 1470 found their center of life in the family's second house, in Gottberg an der Dosse . Another branch went to Sarmstorf in Mecklenburg, but died out around 1360.
Between 1330 and 1477, a branch that had become bourgeois, which is derived from the second house, settled in Neuruppin .
The third Haus Gottberg between Arnswalde and Pyritz in Neumark was founded as early as 1260 . There begins with Michael Gottberg, the owner of this homonymous estate, later also councilor and superior in Stargard and after 1500 a member of the local goldsmith's guild, the secure line of the family. However, this line also sank into the bourgeoisie through manual activity.
Modern times
Peter Gottberg († 1595), also a goldsmith in Stargard, and the latter's son continue the line-up. We find his three sons in high positions in the armies of Europe: Jakob († after 1614) was in 1600 commandant of Pernau , after 1611 Swedish admiral . His maternal uncle, Joachim Scheel († 1606), had previously even made it to the Swedish Imperial Admiral. Paul († 1629) was also in the Swedish service and spent years of his life on the battlefields of the Northern War . He acquired after the rank of colonel his departure had taken, in 1617 the later family estate all ages Dübsow for the family . Peter († 1634) spent his life in changing positions for the Swedes as well as for Poles , the Emperor and the Pomeranian dukes as an officer and diplomat. He also earned special services as a captain in Lauenburg . He bought Peterkau , large and small , for the family, along with other goods that he owned . The Peter and Paul brothers were in 1595 by Emperor Rudolf II. Ennobled .
All members of the family living today are descendants of Paul or his grandson Franz Döring († 1735). Since 1669 the family owned Labüssow permanently . Another property was Starnitz . The brothers Wilhelm († 1848), Werner († 1846) and Heinrich († 1859) settled in East Prussia and thus founded the Prussian branch of the family, which owned the goods Klein and Groß Klitten near Domnau , Prussisch Wilten and Woopen.
coat of arms
On November 8, 1595, in the course of the ennoblement, the paternal coat of arms of the brothers Peter and Paul was changed, adorned and improved by Emperor Rudolf II at the Prague Castle with the result of the following blazon .
Shield: in gold, one with an armored right arm swinging a shiny Turkish saber, covered broad red oblique right bar, accompanied by two stunted brown branches in the direction. Helmet : with black and gold covers on the right, red and black on the left , three (black, red, gold) ostrich feathers.
