history
After the reorganization of Neuville in the 9th century, Grez was incorporated into the 11th century. The names of the two localities derive from the Latin Nova Villa and Greto or Greio .
During the Ancien Régime, Grez-Neuville, despite its double name and despite the two separate localities, only ever belonged to a single parish. Two thirds of its members lived in Neuville, the rest in Grez. In 1688 the community had 193 inhabitants, in 1790 there were 1269, which roughly corresponds to today's population.
The large mill that dominates the weir over the Mayenne gives the impression of a fortified structure. The production of oil and flour ceased in 1955; since then it has housed a dairy. There was a bridge near the weir until the 15th century. After it collapsed, there was only one ferry connection until today's iron bridge was built in 1880.
economy
Agriculture, which originally served for self-sufficiency, has always been at the center of economic activity. Another important line of business in the past was the construction of barges for the transport of goods on inland waters. Holidaymakers can still rent one of the narrow Pénichettes today and use it to travel the Mayenne upstream or downstream to the confluence with the Loir and Sarthe .

Residential buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries can be found in both villages. In Neuville, the rectory from the 18th century Le Grand Logis from the 18th century and the art gallery L'aquarelle are worth seeing . Grez has the private chapel of Saint Jacques, a priory with a tower ( Le Vieux Logis ) and a towpath towards the Isle Briand park .
Showpiece in Grez is the Hl. Martin of Vertou church dedicated to Saint-Martin-de-Vertou. The hall church, built of sandstone, was consecrated in the 12th century and rebuilt and expanded several times over the centuries. The roof beams are clad with panels; the baroque main altar and two side altars date from the 18th century.
