The population increase in recent decades is largely due to the proximity to the city of Angers and the comparatively low rents and land prices.

economy

For centuries, the local economy was geared towards the self-sufficiency of the population. As the population of Angers grew, production was also carried out for the markets there, but this was not easy to achieve because of the distance. In 2010, out of 316 small businesses, 21% were agricultural holdings, 6% small industrial companies, 7% construction, 47% trade, crafts and services and 19% health and administration.

history

Little is known about the history of the small town. Although the place was in the time of the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) away from the clashes, it was set on fire by Breton soldiers during the Guerre folle (1485-1488) . The Huguenot Wars (1562–1598) and the Fronde uprising (1648–1653) also left traces. During the revolution the place remained undisturbed, but on June 19, 1940 the Germans invaded.

  • The Saint-Martin church, dedicated to Saint Martin of Vertou , was built in the 11th century; however, it was restored in the 15th century. Another extensive renovation of the east section in neo-Gothic style ( choir and north transept ) was undertaken in the 19th century. The west part of the church, made of quarry stones, including the Romanesque portal and the single nave, covered with a wooden vault, and the south transept with the tower date back to the 11th century; the late Gothic window of the south transept, on the other hand, is an ingredient from the 15th century. Inside, a cycle of frescoes from the 16th century with scenes from the life and passion of Christ has been preserved. The organ comes from the workshop of Aristide Cavaillé-Coll . Because of its cultural and historical importance, the church has been recognized as a Monument historique since 1980 .
  • A group of large stone blocks ( Ensemble Mégalithique ) located about two kilometers outside the village was placed under protection in 1976.
  • The manor house Manoir Les Vents from the 15th to 17th centuries was registered as a monument historique in 1972 .
  • A privately owned residential building ( logis ) from the 16th to 19th centuries was recognized as a monument historique in 1986 .
