Starlight oasis

In 2009, Großmugl declared itself a starlight oasis as part of the UNESCO Convention as a general “ right to starlight ”. The entire municipality operates active protection against light pollution . Großmugl is located in a depression, the light of the city of Vienna is well shaded by elevations like the Bisamberg . The street lamps in the village focus the economical yellow-orange light downwards so that it does not penetrate the atmosphere. The church tower lighting is switched off regularly at 10 p.m. or 10:30 p.m. On special nights, around mid-August to be able to better observe the Perseid shooting stars, the entire local lighting is turned off for a time window. (As of 2014)

The community aims to be recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site by preserving a natural starry sky . The initiative goes back to the astronomer Günther Wuchterl , who is also head of the Kuffner observatory and who found a particularly dark spot on satellite images of the earth in Großmugl. The initiative is fully supported by the mayor, who is an enthusiastic amateur astronomer

A similar project for Sternfreunde in Baden-Württemberg is the Swabian Alb Star Park .
