Großmugl is an Austrian market town with 1607 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Korneuburg district in Lower Austria .

geography

Großmugl is located in the hill country of the Weinviertel in Lower Austria, about 15 km north of Stockerau . The area of ​​the market town covers 64.47 km², 29.91% of the area is forested.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1298 as Grassemugl (large Mugel), referring to the widely visible Leeberg . This is an artificial hill grave and probably comes from the older Iron Age (Hallstatt period) between 800 and 480/450 BC. Because of its size, it can be assumed that an important personality is buried under the hill. There are also two circular moats, Lange Ries near Steinabrunn and Linen near Herzogbirbaum.

Numerous finds have been made during excavations in the municipality (tools, human and animal bones).

Squalls and heavy rain in the early hours of May 6, 2015 washed away surrounding fields and caused a mudslide in the village.

Population development

The population has decreased continuously since 1869 and reached its lowest level in 1991 at 1,428. Up until the next census in 2001 an increase of 6.4% was recorded for the first time. This is due to the positive balance of migration (+7.5%), which more than made up for the negative birth balance (−1.1%).

90.1% of the population are Roman Catholic , 2.0% are Protestant . Members of the Orthodox Church , Islam and other religious communities are represented with less than 1% , 5.5% of the population are without religious beliefs.

Environmental policy

In 2009 the municipality decided to be the first municipality in Europe to apply for the protection of the night sky by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site . The background of this action lies in the really dark night sky, which is not brightened ( light-polluted ) by the lighting fixtures in and around Großmugl . In Großmugl, around 5,000 stars can be seen at night, in contrast to the not far away city of Vienna , where only around 100 stars can be perceived through the many artificial light. Especially with regard to the numerous prehistoric installations, their - presumably contemporary - astronomical reference is a protected asset in the sense of world heritage endeavors, which should be preserved in a tangible way.

The community has declared itself to be a starlight oasis , which is a light protection area in the sense of the La Palma Declaration of UNESCO 2007 to a dark night sky as a legacy of mankind (“right to starlight”). The process of recognition by UNESCO has been in progress since 2010. The humorous name Großmugl is propagated on the Milky Way .
