The state of Guanajuato ( gwanaˈxwato ), officially the Free and Sovereign State of Guanajuato ( Spanish Estado Libre y Soberano de Guanajuato ), is located in the north-central part of Mexico . It has 4,855,000 inhabitants on 30,491 km². The capital is Guanajuato .
Guanajuato is one of the economically most dynamic states , whose growth rates are regularly above the national average. The major industrial cities of León , Acámbaro , Irapuato and Celaya are located in this state.
Due to the high silver deposits , Guanajuato was one of the first areas to be colonized by the Spanish in the 1520s , after central Mexico and the coast of the Gulf of Mexico . Even today, the Guanajuato silver mines are among the most productive in the world. In addition to silver, tin , gold , copper , lead , mercury and opals are also mined.
