Gustav Karl Emil Beatus von Hollen , from 1866 Freiherr von Hollen (born December 22, 1851 in Schönweide , † November 7, 1917 in Königsberg ) was a Prussian general of the cavalry .

Gustav was a son of the landowner and Danish court hunter Julius von Hollen (1804–1879) and the younger brother of the later Vice Admiral Georg von Hollen and the district administrator Karl von Hollen . On March 21, 1866, his father, who had supported the Prussian side in the German-Danish War , received the Prussian nobility recognition with elevation to the baron class for himself and his descendants.

Military career

On May 13, 1873, Hollen joined the Schleswig-Holstein Uhlan Regiment No. 15 of the Prussian Army in the Strasbourg garrison as a portepée ensign . There he became second lieutenant on October 15, 1874 , rose to regimental adjutant in 1882 and was promoted to prime lieutenant on August 4, 1883 . With the outbreak of World War I , Hollen was appointed commander of the Higher Cavalry Command 4 according to mobilization . In this function, the 3rd and 6th Cavalry Divisions were subordinate to him. In the 5th Army , he took part in the march between Diedenhofen and Metz and had the task of carrying out reconnaissance on the Mézières - St. Mihiel stretch of the Meuse and proceeding on Carignan and Damvillers . Another aim of the investigation was to determine whether the Meuse below Verdun was heavily occupied, or whether French forces were advancing against the 4th and 5th Armies from there, via Verdun or between this fortress and Metz . After the dissolution of the cavalry command, Hollen was appointed commander of the 3rd Infantry Division on December 11, 1914 , which at that time was on the Eastern Front . He led them in the battles near Lodz , on the Rawka - Bzura and around Przasnysz . On July 15, 1915, he handed over the large formation to his successor Hermann von Staabs and was given command of the 37th Infantry Division .

In recognition of his achievements, Hollen was awarded both classes of the Iron Cross and the swords for the Star of the Red Eagle Order II. Class with Oak Leaves. On July 21, 1916, he asked for his release due to illness. He was promoted to General of the Cavalry on January 27, 1917 .

Hollen had married Leontine Bernhardine Helene Countess von Roedern (born February 11, 1863 in Polkwitz, † December 23, 1942 in Wildau) in July 1894 . She was a daughter of the Rittmeister a. D. Bernhard Graf von Roedern and his wife Marie, née Miethe. The marriage produced a daughter.
