The FFH area NSG Gut Grindt and NSG Rheinaue between km 830.7–833.2, only part of the area is around 116 hectares and is located in the North Rhine-Westphalian town of Xanten on the Lower Rhine . It is located in the Rheinaue near the district of Vynen . As an FFH area, it forms part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas .

The part of the name "NSG" refers to the previously independent nature reserve designations of this area. The two former nature reserves Gut Grindt and Rheinaue between river kilometers 830.7 and 833.2 merged in 2004 in the larger NSG Reeser Schanz, Rheinaue between Obermörmter and Vynen, at Gut Grindt and Haus Lüttingen ; the FFH area lies entirely in this nature reserve. In addition, the area is also in the much larger EU bird sanctuary DE-4203-401 Lower Lower Rhine . The listed Gut Grindt , which appears in the area name, is located outside of the FFH area further south-east near the Xanten district of Wardt .

Flora and fauna

The area is an important breeding and wintering place for waders and water birds . It is largely characterized by moist grassland areas that lie entirely within the floodplains of the Rhine . Even at slightly higher levels in the Rhine, shallow water areas form, especially in the western part of the Rheinaue, which favor the formation of flood turf in deeper troughs . In the eastern area of the Rheinaue on the other hand, see in particular white willow - and other riparian forest areas and reed canary grass - reedbeds . The silver willow alluvial forest in the area is one of the most valuable alluvial forest relics on the Lower Rhine.
