The men's handball FDGB Cup was held for the 13th time in the 1982/83 season. At the final tournament in Rostock , ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt / O. to win the title. A team from the handball GDR league qualified for the final tournament with SG Dynamo Halle-Neustadt . Defending champion SC Leipzig was eliminated in the third main round against the second representation from ASK forward Frankfurt / O. out.

In the first and second main round, which, like the third, was played in the knockout system , the teams from the handball GDR league and qualified district cup representatives took part. In both rounds, the district representatives had a home advantage over the GDR league teams. From the third main round, the ten teams from the handball GDR league were added and the winners of the second main round were drawn as visiting teams. The first three rounds were drawn based on territorial criteria, if possible. In the fourth main round there were back and forth games and the five best-placed teams of the past league season were set so that they did not meet. After this round, the last five teams determined the cup winners in a final tournament.
