Helmut M. Braem Translator Award
The Helmut M. Braem Translator Award was Germany's first translator award. It has been sponsored every two years since 1978 by the Friends of the Promotion of Literary and Scientific Translations. V. “for the exemplary translation of a prose work into German ”.
Self-application from translators is welcome; German-language publishers are also invited to submit award-winning translations.
The prize is financed by grants from publishers and private donations and is endowed with € 12,000 (as of 2020).
The Freundeskreis appoints a five-member jury for each advertisement , made up of three translators, a journalist and a scientist from the field of linguistics , literature or cultural studies . The jury members are usually appointed for two award dates.
The award ceremony takes place during the annual conference of the Association of German-Language Translators of Literary and Scientific Works (VdÜ) in Wolfenbüttel .
The award is dedicated to the memory of Helmut M. Braem , the long-time chairman of the Association of Literary Translators VdÜ. The association owes u. a. the annual conference ( today Wolfenbütteler Talks ), the magazine Translate and the Circle of Friends for the Promotion of Literary and Scientific Translations e. V.
Helmut M. Braem translated numerous English-speaking authors, often in collaboration with his wife Elisabeth Braem-Kaiser, including EE Cummings , William Faulkner and Henry James .
