Honda RVF 750: racing version in the Technik-Museum Speyer

The RVF 750 (RC 45) is a super sports motorcycle from the Japanese vehicle manufacturer Honda . The RVF 750 was presented to the public in autumn 1993 at the EICMA motorcycle fair in Milan as a homologation model for the Superbike World Championship . For the 2000 season it was replaced by the Honda VTR 1000 SP1 .

history

The Honda RVF 750 with the factory code RC 45 was launched as the successor to the legendary Honda VFR 750 R RC 30. Like the RC 30, the RC 45 was only produced in limited numbers and was only available as a single-seater. The new price at the time was DM 44,480  . The RC 45 was used in the Superbike World Championship , in the FIM Endurance World Championship , at the Suzuka 8-hour race in Japan, and in road races such as the Tourist Trophy on the Isle of Man . The letter combination RVF is made up as follows: R stands for Racing, V for V-Motor and F for Four. There was also a small version of the RC 45 with a displacement of 400 cm³, the Honda RVF 400 (NC 35) .

technology

engine

The drive was again, as in the RC30 also a 90-degree four-cylinder - V engine using what the width as opposed to the four-cylinder engines decreased significantly. The four overhead camshafts were driven by gears from the crankshaft . This design increased the reliability compared to the timing chain or the toothed belt because tearing or skipping and thus engine damage was excluded. In contrast to the RC 30 motor, the gears were no longer placed in the middle, but on the right-hand side next to the cylinders . This saved a crankshaft bearing and further reduced the overall width. The electronic manifold injection , called PGM-FI by Honda, was completely new . The control unit was freely programmable.

landing gear

The chassis geometry of the RC 30 was only slightly changed for the RC 45. The chassis largely corresponded to the standard of the other Japanese superbike models. That is, there was a bridge frame made of aluminum is used, and steering head - and swing adsorption were carried out in die casting. The front wheel was guided by an upside-down fork with 41 mm thick dip tubes. The difference was made by the single-sided swing arm , called "Pro Arm" by Honda. This system was developed in the 1980s by Honda in cooperation with the French company elf france in order to be able to change wheels more quickly in endurance races. Both have had this system patented, so any other manufacturer who wanted to use it had to pay patent fees. The disadvantage of the RC 45 chassis is a stubborn turning and pitching behavior caused by the 16-inch front wheel with a 130 millimeter wide tire, as is the case with the Honda CBR 900 RR Fireblade and the Honda NR 750 RC 40. The selection of current sports tires is also limited for this rim dimension.
