The Huanca district is located in the Caylloma Province in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district was established on February 14, 1927. It has an area of 372 km². The 2017 census counted 1010 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2374, in 2007 it was 1841. The district administration is located in the 3080 m high village of Huanca with 586 inhabitants (as of 2017). Huanca is 53 km southwest of the provincial capital Chivay . The Ampato volcano rises 23 km north of Huanca.
Geographical location
The Huanca District is located on the southern flank of the Cordillera Volcánica in the southwest of the Caylloma Province. The maximum lengthwise extension in SW-NE direction is 39 km, the maximum width almost 16 km. The area is drained through the Río Siguas, a right tributary of the Río Quilca , to the southwest.
The Huanca district is bordered to the west by the district Lluta , in the northeast on the district Achoma , in the southeast of the district Yura ( Arequipa Province ) and in the southwest to the districts Vítor and Santa Isabel de Siguas (both in the province of Arequipa).
