The 1948/49 season was the fourth regular season of the International Hockey League . During the regular season, the eleven teams played between 31 and 35 games. In the play-offs, the Windsor Hettche Spitfires prevailed and won the second Turner Cup in their club's history. The Toledo Mercurys competed in both the Northern and the Southern Division, as the team owners wanted to increase the number of games their team played.
Team changes
The following changes were made before the start of the season:
- The Detroit Metal Moldings changed their name to Detroit Jerry Lynch.
- The Windsor Staffords changed their name to Windsor Ryancretes.
- The Akron Americans were added to the league as an expansion team.
- The Louisville Blades were added to the league as an expansion team.
- The Milwaukee Clarks were added to the league as an expansion team.
- The Muncie Flyers were added to the league as an expansion team.
