Floriana ( Maltese : Il-Furjana , also called Borgo Vilhena ) is a municipality in Malta with 2,516 inhabitants (2017). It is located as a suburb immediately southwest of the capital Valletta and is therefore also known as the "gateway to Valletta". In the southwest are the Floriana Lines , a second belt of fortifications in Valletta. On Triton Fountain on the outskirts of Valletta is the bus terminal Valletta.
The Botanical Gardens ( Argotti Botanic Gardens ) and the numerous parks in this small but important city are impressive . On Pjazza San Publju most important public events take place on the island, including the two visits of Pope John Paul II.
history
Floriana's story began in 1634 when the Grand Master of the Order of Malta , Antoine de Paule , commissioned the Italian master builder Pietro Paolo Floriani from Macerata to check and expand the fortifications of the island of Malta, which were supposed to protect against an impending Turkish invasion .
In 1883 the eleven kilometer long Valletta – Mdina railway line from Valletta to Mdina was opened. The first train station after Valletta was 800 meters away in Medina. Railway operations were stopped in 1931 due to a lack of profitability.
In 1922, the King George Fifth Hospital was opened in Floriana . It closed in 1967 and reopened under new management as Boffa Hospital in 1970 , named after Sir Paul Boffa , a doctor and former Prime Minister of Malta.
Sports
Malta's oldest football club, Floriana FC , plays in Floriana and is one of the most successful football clubs on the island with 25 championships.
Partnerships
There are partnerships between the Italian city of Macerata in the Marche region and Floriana. The namesake of the city, Pietro Paolo Floriani (1585–1638), came from Macerata . Another partnership exists with the municipality of Kerċem on the island of Gozo .
