Stetteldorf am Wagram

Stetteldorf am Wagram is a market town with 1057 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Korneuburg district in Lower Austria . Like its district Eggendorf , it is located north of the Danube on the striking ridge of the Wagram and is best known for its viticulture .

Stetteldorf am Wagram is located in the Weinviertel in Lower Austria. The area of the market town covers 25.74 square kilometers, a large part of which is vineyards and 1.0 percent is forested.

history

Stetteldorf, first mentioned around 1120, belonged to the Counts of Peilstein and was awarded to the Burgrave of Nuremberg, Friedrich von Zollern , after it died out by King Rudolf von Habsburg in 1278 . This Brandenburg property was lent to various nobles. In 1330 Stetteldorf became a parish after the parish of Hausleiten, and since 1460 it has been a market. In 1461 a state parliament was held here. In 1582 Bartholomäus von Starhemberg sold the rule and the market to Count Julius II zu Hardegg , Glatz and in Machland, who had the Juliusburg Castle built here, which was completed in 1588 . His nephew, Count Georg Friedrich, relocated the administration of his goods in Oberabsdorf, Oberrußbach, Schmida, Seitzersdorf, Unterparschenbrunn and Wolfpassing to Juliusburg. In 1717, under Count Julius IV, the Passauian Oberzögersdorf, separated from the Sierndorf estate, was added with half the town of Oberolberndorf. In 1683 the great council of war under King Johann Sobieski of Poland met in the castle before the king crossed the Danube at Neuaigen on his procession to relieve Vienna, which was besieged by the Turks. The last majorate master was Johann Friedrich von Hardegg in Stetteldorf, who fell in the last days of the war in 1945.

From the first half of the 9th century there are remains of settlements and a burial ground in Eggendorf with characteristic Danube Slavic finds, which can be recognized from the costume and burial ritual. The fact that after the middle of the 9th century there were almost no other burials or toppings with food additions and vessels suggests the advancing Christianization during this time.

Population development

According to the results of the 2001 census, there were 1021 inhabitants. In 1991 the market town had 935 inhabitants, in 1981 884 and in 1971 1024 inhabitants.

Juliusburg Castle : In 1683 the Polish King Jan Sobieski , Duke Karl of Lorraine and German princes planned the liberation of Vienna from the Turks in the castle . The remains of the palace gardens and the court gardens of Juliusburg Palace are used for cultural purposes.

In 2010 there were 46 agricultural and forestry holdings, 32 of which were full-time farms. In the production sector, 14 companies employed 39 people, in the service sector 156 employees worked in 55 companies (as of 2011).

In 2007 it was recognized as one of the most senior-friendly communities in Lower Austria.
