It is the originally Slavic variant of Johanna ("God is gracious"). The short form Janna (from East Friesland) is less common .

Alternatively, Jana comes from Roman mythology . In Varro, Iana appears as an alternative form for Diana . According to Vollmer, Jana refers to "the ancient Italian goddess of the moon, from which Diana is derived, Diva Jana".
