Yevgeny Mikhailovich Sergeev ( Russian Евгений Михайлович Сергеев ; born March 10 . Jul / 23. March  1914 greg. In Moscow ; † 23. March 1997 ) was a Russian geologist , and university teachers .

Life

Sergejew already took part in surveying expeditions in northern Kazakhstan and Karelia for the White Sea-Baltic Canal while studying at the Moscow Topography Technical Center . After graduating from the technical college in 1932, he worked as a topographer in the Far East . In 1935 he returned to Moscow and began studying at the Faculty of Soil Science and Geography of Moscow University (MGU) . In 1939 he became a member of the CPSU . After completing his studies in 1940, he stayed at the chair for soil science and became an assistant in 1941.

From the beginning of the German-Soviet War , Sergejew served in the reconnaissance departments of the Red Army . From July to the end of December 1942 he took part in the Battle of Stalingrad . In June 1943 he was badly wounded, lost a foot and was demobilized as a major .

Sergejew returned to the Chair of Soil Science at MGU. In 1944 he defended his candidate dissertation , whereupon he became a lecturer . In 1946 he published selected chapters on general soil science, from which his widespread textbook on soil science emerged. He developed new methods for studying rock and soil types and investigated the property correlations . In 1949 he introduced the concept of optimal soil compression. In 1951 he defended his doctoral thesis on the genesis and composition of soils as the basis for classifying and studying their properties. In 1953 he became professor and head of the chair for soil science at the MGU. With others he had initiated the construction of the new university building on the Lenin Mountains (one of the Seven Sisters ). In a series of publications, Sergejew dealt with the work of Michail Wassiljewitsch Lomonossow (1949, 1950), Vasili Robertowitsch Wiljams (1950), Michail Michailowitsch Filatow (1956, 1957, 1963, 1979), Sergei Sergejewitsch Morozov (1958), Sergei Sergejewitsch Tschetwerikow (1958), WW Okhotin (1958), Iwan Wassiljewitsch Popow (1960, 1980, 1991), Nikolai Sergejewitsch Shatsky and others. Sergejev's students and staff included Viktor Ivanovich Osipov , Vladimir Alexandrovich Korolev , Galina Andreevna Golodkowskaja, and Georgi Sergejewitsch Solotarjow . Sergejew was the author or co-author of a large number of publications.

Under Sergeyev's direction and with his direct participation, the investigations for the Turkmen Main Canal were carried out from 1951 to 1953. In the valleys of Ob , Irtysh , Yenisei and Amur , he carried out studies on the use of hydropower from 1954 to 1961 . His engineering geological studies in Eastern Siberia (1960-1963), Western Siberia (1961-1975) and the non- black soil zone of the RSFSR (1976-1981) were used for exploration of oil - and gas - deposits . In 1966 Sergeyev was elected a Corresponding Member and in 1979 a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR, since 1991 Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN)). From the 1980s he devoted himself to the problems of using and protecting the geological environment. His work on this contributed to geoecology .

Sergejew was a member of the International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG) and was elected President in 1972 and 1978. 1981–1986 Sergeyev was rector of the Academy of Economics at the Council of Ministers of the USSR .

Sergejew was married to Alexandra Mikhailovna Sergejewa (1913-2001). He was buried in the Trojekurovo cemetery.

Since 1999 the annual geoecological conference Sergejew lecture of the RAN takes place. The RAN Institute of Geoecology bears Sergeev's name. The mineral sergeevite was named after Sergeyev.
