Jhoan Esteban Chaves Rubio (born January 17, 1990 in Bogotá ) is a Colombian cyclist .
Athletic career
Esteban Chaves rode for the Colombian cycling team Colombia es Pasión-Café de Colombia from 2009 and won a stage at the Vuelta a Cundinamarca in 2009. In the 2011 season he won a day segment at the Clásica Club Deportivo Boyacá and the overall ranking of the Tour de l'Avenir .
In the 2012 and 2013 seasons, Chaves was under contract with the Colombia-Coldeportes team . In 2012 he won a stage of the Vuelta a Burgos and won the Gran Premio Città di Camaiore . At the beginning of the 2013 season he had a hard crash in the Italian one-day race Trofeo Laigueglia . He suffered a traumatic brain injury and amnesia . Later I found out a nerve injury that threatened to paralyze the right arm, but could largely be remedied by a nine-hour operation and months of rehabilitation.
In 2014 Chaves moved to the UCI WorldTeam Orica GreenEdge . In the first year of his comeback for this team, he won stages in the Tour of California and the Tour de Suisse . He also took part in a major country tour , the Vuelta a España 2014 , for the first time. which he finished in 41st place. At the Vuelta a España 2015 , he won two stages, wore the leader's Maillot Rojo for six days and finished the tour in fifth overall. At the subsequent Giro d'Italia 2016 , he won a stage, took over the Maglia Rosa of the overall leader for one day after the 19th stage and came second overall. In the road race of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he finished 21st.
In the same year, Esteban Chaves, who is said to be always in a good mood and to smile, won a “Monument to Cycling” with the Lombardy Tour . He was the first Colombian to win such a monument and the first non-European to win at Il Lombardia .
