Johann Franz Count Khuen von Belasi , also Johann VIII. Franz von Khuen (born August 12, 1649 in Hall in Tirol , † April 3, 1702 in Brixen ) was Prince-Bishop of Brixen from 1687 to 1702 .

Live and act

He was the son of Johann Franz Graf von Khuen and Countess Margret von Trapp. After his high school studies in Hall, he went to the Germanikum in Rome, where he studied from 1666 to 1675. During this Roman period he was ordained a priest there on September 4, 1672 .

After returning home, Johann Franz Graf von Khuen was assigned canons in Freising , Brixen and Passau . In 1682 he became pastor of Bolzano , where he proved himself to be a conscientious pastor and benefactor of the needy.

After the death of Prince-Bishop Paulinus Mayr , the Brixen cathedral chapter elected him as the new bishop on November 15, 1685. The confirmation from Rome only took place on May 12, 1687; July 29, the year his was consecrated bishop in the cathedral of Bressanone instead.

One of Khuen's first official acts was the acquittal of Maria Hueber , the later founder of the Tertiary Sisters in Brixen, who was accused of witchcraft because she had predicted the unexpected death of his predecessor.

Thanks to his support, the Säben Benedictine convent was built in 1686 . Other foundations of monasteries during his tenure were that of the Ursulines in Innsbruck (1692), that of the Capuchins in Innichen (1692), that of the Servites at Volders (1698) and that of the Capuchins in Klausen (1699). As a peace-loving shepherd, he also managed to end the long-running disputes between the diocese of Brixen and the Stams monastery in the Upper Inn Valley.

Prince-Bishop Johann Franz Graf von Khuen attached great importance to visitations in his diocese. Despite his balancing nature, relations with the cathedral chapter were at times somewhat clouded because he intended to settle the Jesuits in the diocese, which the canons vigorously opposed. His charity towards everyone was widely known, which is why the following characteristic was written on his grave in Brixen Cathedral: “ A father of the poor and a benefactor of the episcopal city.
