Kaštela [ kaʃˈtɛla ] is a town in Croatia with 38,667 inhabitants (2011 census).

The city is located on the coast of central Dalmatia between Trogir and Split . In the 15th and 16th centuries , 13 forts were built on the 16 km long coastal strip , which should serve to ward off attacks by the Turks. In the course of time, places developed around these forts, which today form the town of Kaštela and gave it its name.

Seven of the 13 castles are still preserved: Kaštel Štafilić, Kaštel Novi, Kaštel Stari, Kaštel Lukšić, Kaštel Kambelovac, Kaštel Gomilica, Kaštel Sućurac

The coastal section is climatically protected by the Kozjak Mountains. In the hinterland of the settlements there are many fields where fruits, olives, vines and vegetables are grown. Kaštela is also a tourist center and a popular destination for the residents of Split . The international airport of Split is also located here .

Train accident in 2009

On July 24, 2009, near the Kaštel Stari station, the ICN 521, a tilting train , derailed in a tight curve at excessive speed. Six dead and 40 injured were the result. The reason was that immediately before the train crashed on the route, the wooden sleepers of the train had been sprayed with fire retardant, but the rails had also been sprayed. An oil film formed on these, which prevented the train of the accident from braking to the permissible speed before the curve. It took 11 days to clean the rails again.

Kaštel Lukšić

Kaštel Lukšić has 5,425 inhabitants (as of 2011).

Attractions

  • One of the special sights is the Vitturi Castle, built at the end of the 15th century on an islet near the shore. Place of the legend of Miljenko Rusinic and Dobrila Vitturi, now a museum.
  • Botanical Garden
  • In Kaštel Lukšić there is one of the largest cacti in Europe on a house.
  • Church of Gospino uznesenje, 1515, with sarcophagus of Archbishop Amir of Split

Kaštel Kambelovac

Kaštel Kambelovac has 5,027 inhabitants (as of 2011). The place was named after the Cambi family from Split, who had several fortresses built here. The center of the complex is a palace with a round tower and balcony.

In 1911 the Cambi family built the “Baletna škola” (ballet school) villa, initially as a holiday home. After the Second World War, Ana Roje and Oskar Harmos opened the first ballet school in Dalmatia here. Today the building is used as a music school.

Kaštel Gomilica

Kaštel Gomilica has 4,881 inhabitants (as of 2011). Benedictine nuns from Split built the Romanesque church of Sv. Kozma i Damjan. The fort was built at the beginning of the 16th century on a rock in front of it and was connected to the mainland by a drawbridge.

Kaštel Sućurac

Cement factory "Sv. Juraj"

Kaštel Sućurac is the closest district to Split and has 6,829 inhabitants (as of 2011). The Sućurac castle is considered to be the oldest and best preserved. The first fortress tower was built in 1392, the complex was later expanded several times.

Due to the large factories located here (former Jugovinil chemical factory and Dalmacija Cement cement factory , today Sv. Juraj ), Kaštel Sućurac is more of an industrial suburb of Split. It is still not very well developed for tourism.
