Friedrich Karl Hellwig Schmidt , von Schmidt since 1798 , (born November 27, 1773 in Könnern ; † January 28, 1841 in Berlin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

He was the son of the Prussian Colonel Stephan Schmidt (1719–1795) and his wife Juliane Christiane, née Mehlhofe (1734–1807). The father was the commander of the depot battalion in the “von Budberg” infantry regiment and was raised to the personal nobility by King Friedrich Wilhelm II . Schmidt still had four brothers who, like himself, were raised to the hereditary Prussian nobility on July 6, 1798.

Military career

On February 20, 1788, Schmidt joined the Prussian Army's fusilier battalion " von Wilhelmi " as a corporal . There he became porteefähnrich on October 26, 1789 and transferred to the fusilier battalion " von Legat ", where he became second lieutenant on May 30, 1790 . As such, he took part in the campaign in Poland in 1794/95 .

Schmidt fought during the First Coalition War in the battle of Kaiserslautern , for which he received a commendation, also in Briquenay, Limbach, Hornbach, Morrsheim, Biebrich and Blieskastel . In the meantime he was promoted to Adjutant of the battalion on May 1, 1792 . On February 19, 1803, Schmidt joined the Westphalian Fusilier Brigade and on September 14, 1805, he became Premier Lieutenant . In the Fourth Coalition War he was wounded in the foot in a battle near Lübeck and on April 22, 1807, a staff captain and on August 20, 1808, a captain and company commander in the 2nd Pomeranian Infantry Regiment .

At the beginning of the Wars of Liberation , Schmidt rose to major and battalion commander on March 28, 1813 . He fought in the battles near Großbeeren , Dennewitz , Leipzig , Laon , Ligny , Belle Alliance as well as Compiègne , Namur as well as the blockade of Wittenberg , the assault on Arnhem and the sieges of Landrecies , Philippeville and Givet . Schmidt received the Iron Cross II. Class for Dennewitz and the First Class Cross for Arnheim. On April 10, 1815 he was appointed regimental commander and on October 3, 1815 as an award for Ligny , he was promoted to lieutenant colonel out of turn .

After the peace agreement, Schmidt rose to colonel on October 7, 1818 and was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle III on the occasion of the festival in 1821 . Class excellent. On September 27, 1821 he was appointed commander of the 2nd Infantry Brigade in Danzig . In 1825 he received the service cross . After being appointed commander of the 2nd Landwehr Brigade, Schmidt was promoted to major general on March 30, 1828 with a patent from April 2, 1828 . On January 18, 1832, he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd Class with Oak Leaves, for his services. The Russian Emperor paid tribute to Schmidt for his achievements during the campaign in Poland in 1794/95 on September 16, 1832 by being awarded the Order of St. Stanislaus I Class and on January 24, 1833 with the Order of St. Anna II Class. On January 18, 1836 he received the star for the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class. On March 30, 1837 Schmidt was entrusted with the management of the business as 1st Commander of Danzig and at the same time appointed Commander of the 2nd Division . On the occasion of his 50th anniversary in service, he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle 1st Class with Oak Leaves on February 20, 1838 and was also made an honorary citizen of Gdansk. On March 15, 1838, he was then put up for disposition as lieutenant general with the statutory pension . He died in Berlin on January 28, 1841 and was buried in the garrison cemetery on February 1, 1841 .

Schmidt married Maria Katharine Meyer (1781–1862) on January 17, 1800 in Rheine. The couple had several children:
