Katihar is a district in the Indian state of Bihar .

The area is 3057 km². The administrative seat is the city of Katihar .

history

Katihar became a district in 1972 when it was separated from the Purnia .

population

The population is 3,264,619 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 28.45% and was therefore very high. Purnia has a gender ratio of 919 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus that is usual for India. The district has a literacy rate of 52.24% in 2011, an increase of almost 17 percentage points compared to 2001. However, reading skills are still well below the national average. Almost 55% of the population are Hindus and around 45% are Muslim .

Only 8.9% of the population live in cities. The largest city is Katihar with 226,261 inhabitants.
