Kirby ( jap. 星のカービィ Hoshi no Kabi , such as "Kirby of the Stars") is based on the eponymous protagonist named platformers Run - video game series by Nintendo . The Nintendo-close studio HAL Laboratory is responsible for the development . Especially in Japan, Kirby is one of the most famous Nintendo developments. The character appears only in video games for Nintendo game consoles on. The games were adapted as manga and anime series , among other things .

Kirby is a small, ball-shaped and pink (in the West initially white) resident of the also fictional planet Pop Star , who has special properties due to the enormous elasticity of his body. Its most distinctive ability is to suck in opponents and other things and thus possibly also to copy the abilities of the opponents.

Masahiro Sakurai is considered the creator of Kirby.

chronology

This list contains all of the official Kirby games that have ever been available in stores and are likely to appear in the future. The date refers to the first publication, which in almost all cases took place in Japan or the USA . Since the release dates for some of the games from the nineties differ, it is possible that some dates differ slightly from the actual ones.

In Canada , the names of the games correspond to the US names. In Australia , Kirby's Ghost Trap and Kirby's Fun Pak were released under the European names, while the newer games Kirby: Power Paint Brush and Kirby: Mouse Attack were released under the US names .

For games published in Europe , each of which has a German and an English title, there are a few more titles in the respective national languages.

history

The following describes the career, the game principles and the basic content of the Kirby series. The development is explained in greater detail using platforming games, while reference is made to individual articles for games in other genres .

General

Kirby made his first appearance in the game boy game Kirby's Dream Land . While the development of the play figure progressed mainly within the platform games, the Kirby series is also characterized by the fact that it consists of games of very different genres, with known genres often being combined with typical Kirby elements. The easy accessibility is also a reason for the success.

Symbolized representation of the gameplay : Kirby (left, stylized) swallows an enemy and thereby receives his sword.

In most games, the player has to steer the pink Kirby through different levels , at the end of which in many cases a boss has to be defeated. A central element of the game is often Kirby's ability to suck in and spit things out, for example to fight opponents. In many games, Kirby can also copy their skills by swallowing (or defeating) certain opponents. For example, if Kirby swallows a stone creature, Kirby can transform itself into a stone block and thus "flatten" opponents. By swallowing a fire opponent, however, Kirby can spit fire or hiss around as a living fireball. Kirby can also breathe air in order to inflate herself - similar to a balloon - and to be able to fly by opening and flicking her arms. The air that Kirby expels to regain its normal size can also be used as a projectile against mostly weaker opponents.

Kirby games in particular, which cannot be classified in the genre of jump 'n' runs, also make use of very special movement options. In Kirby's Pinball Land , Kirby is handled like a pinball ball ; in Kirby's Dream Course , he is hit from one point to another like a golf ball . In Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble , control is even carried out through the targeted movement of the game console.

An extensive range of merchandise was marketed for Kirby , but mostly only in Japan.

Emergence

Masahiro Sakurai is considered to be the inventor of Kirby, whom he created when he was only 19 years old. Originally, however, Kirby wasn't supposed to exist in its current form. When Nintendo's first-party studio HAL Laboratory, Inc. received the order for a new Game Boy game, a placeholder was created for the later planned game hero. This was Kirby, who was still called Popopo (ポ ポ ポ) at that time . However, this figure gained so much sympathy among the developers that it was ultimately retained. During development, it was also renamed Kirby (after attorney John Kirby, who successfully represented Nintendo in the US). However, there were disputes over the color of Kirby. While Masahiro Sakurai preferred pink, Shigeru Miyamoto considered yellow . Finally Rosa was able to prevail. However, this disagreement caused confusion at Nintendo's North American branch (Nintendo of America, Inc.), so that Kirby was simply kept in white on the cover of the finished game Kirby's Dream Land in North America and also in Europe, even in the television advertising relating to these regions which shows a completely white cartoon Kirby. In Japan, however, where the game is known as Hoshi no Kirby , Kirby was depicted in pink on the cover from the start. Kirby's Dream Land should also be a game suitable for beginners. This basic idea was continued in all subsequent Kirby games.

Except for Kirby's Dream Land worked Masahiro Sakurai also to Kirby's Adventure , Kirby's Pinball country , Kirby's Fun Pak , Kirby: Shadow threaten Dreamland and Kirby Air Ride as a director with. Satoru Iwata , Nintendo's CEO from 2002 to 2015, worked as a producer on the development of the Kirby games while at HAL Laboratory .

Kirby platformer

The development of the character Kirby was and is mainly within the platform games, the development of which is described in this section. In the Japanese originals, all jump 'n' runs can be identified by the title, they always begin with the words Hoshi no Kirby ( 星 の カ ー ビ ィ ), which means something like "Kirby of the stars".

The aim of the first Kirbyspiels is that the self-proclaimed King Dedede (then due to localization even King Dedede ) and his helpers stolen food supplies and Glitter star (Engl. Sparkling Stars ) retrieve. The latter are of particular importance, as they enable Kirby and his conspecifics in Traumland (English and often also in German Dream Land , location on Pop Star) to play and work carefree. In the almost text-free game, this background plot is only shown rudimentarily, there is no opening credits that would tell the story.

Kirby already has most of his basic skills. There is still no talk of the opponent's ability to gain abilities, but there are already some items in the game that briefly give Kirby special abilities that are independent of opponents, for example Kirby can occasionally spit fire by picking up a “hot plate”. Mostly it is important to suck in opponents and other objects and in turn spit on another object in order to defeat opponents and to be able to continue on the way. Furthermore, we find in many places so-called Warpsterne (Engl. Warp Stars ), transport the Kirby quickly from one place to another and also appear in almost all subsequent Kirbyspielen.

Already here it is important to defeat a final boss at the end of each game level. After the first play through, there is also the option of playing the game again on a higher level of difficulty , u. a. to play with new and stronger opponents.

The first Kirby game also had the largest sales success in terms of numbers compared to all successors, with over 5.1 million units sold.

Kirby's Adventure

The 1993 game Kirby's Adventure was Kirby's first and only appearance on the NES . Kirby's Adventure is one of the last NES games and one of the few with German on-screen text and a memory function.

The task this time, the individual pieces of the Star Scepter (Engl. Star Rod ) recover. It was broken by King Dedede, who distributed the pieces to his subjects. The Star Rod is usually on the top of the dream fountain (Engl. Fountain of Dreams ). This is where the wishes and hopes of living beings are collected, and the dream fountain ensures the dreams that are important for a pleasant sleep . However, if the star scepter is not on its tip, the fountain does not fulfill its function and the living beings cannot dream. The plot is also conveyed in the form of an opening credits consisting of texts and images, there is also a beginner's briefing, and otherwise the text content is much higher than in the first Kirby game.

In this game, Kirby for the first time has the opportunity to acquire the skills of certain opponents (acquired skills are also known as special power , special power or special power ). How he came to this talent is not officially known in terms of the plot. The use of different skills, over twenty in number, gives the game far more possibilities for variation than its predecessor. In addition to defeating opponents, the skills have other functions. Sometimes the right skills have to be used in the right places, for example only the hammer and stone skills can be used to drive stakes into the ground, which opens up new avenues. In addition, all sections of the game that have already been passed can be explored again and searched for hidden switches that reveal secret locations. Kirby can also run and perform a slide attack. In addition, the game is the first Kirby game to contain mini-games in which points and extra lives can be gained.

Thanks to the color representation of the NES, Kirby comes in pink, which could correct the error of the western cover.

The game features the first appearance of Sir Meta Knight , a Kirby not dissimilar blue (initially black) swordsman who usually hides his face behind a mask. In this game he is the sixth final boss, in some later Kirby games he plays an even more important role.

With over 1.7 million copies sold, the game was still a success despite the age of the NES.

In February 2007 Kirby's Adventure was published for the virtual console of the game console Wii , on November 17, 2011 in a revised 3D version as part of the 3D Classics series in the 3DS eShop .

Kirby's Dream Land 2

In 1995 the name successor to the first Kirby game appeared. This time it's up to Kirby to find the reason why the rainbow bridge between the Rainbow Islands (Engl. Rainbow Islands ) have disappeared. For this he sets off on each island to look for the rainbow drops (Engl. Rainbow Drops ) to restore the bridges. While it at first seems that King Dedede is behind it again, shortly before the end of the game, if all rainbow drops have been collected, it turns out that the malicious mass Dark Matter is the real culprit and brought Dedede under his control.

Instead of Masahiro Sakurai, Shinichi Shimomura took part in this game as director, who was already the second director after Sakurai in the development of Kirby's Adventure .

In principle, Kirby's Dream Land 2 does not differ much from Kirby's Adventure at first glance , whereby Kirby cannot run and cannot carry out his slide attack. Furthermore, there are only 7 special skills.

The big innovation for Kirbyspiele in this case is that there are friendly characters who both actively intervene in the game and can be controlled by the player. These are Rick the hamster , Coo the owl , and Kine the fish . Kirby can team up with either of them, a move later is possible. Each of the friends has special characteristics. Rick is particularly good on the mainland, Coo can be steered precisely through the air and arrives even against strong winds, while Kine is an excellent swimmer and can swim against currents. Another special feature is that the way a special ability works changes depending on the friend. For example, while Kirby solely by the ability electric forming a sparking shield on small distance around it, he shoots while being supported by the owl Coo, a broad electron beam downwards, thereby "bombing" are possible. In this regard, Kirby's Dream Land 2 is on par with Kirby's Adventure in terms of the number of special abilities .

With over 2.3 million copies sold, this Kirby game had the second biggest sales success.

Kirby's Fun Pak

In 1996 , a Kirby platformer was first released for the SNES . In Europe it appeared under the name Kirby's Fun Pak . It is still considered one of the most popular Kirby games to this day.

Much is already familiar from Kirby's Adventure . Here, too, Kirby can adopt special skills, whereby in addition to a color change, they also give him headgear, such as a fool's cap , a pointed cap or a feather hood . With a single special power, however, through the use of key combinations, there is usually much more than just one or two attack options, as is the case with almost all skills in Kirby's Adventure and Kirby's Dream Land 2 . For example, Kirby throws with the ability wings (Engl. Wing ) individual with a simple push of a button springs as he hisses when you press the button during the race forward and rams objects located in its path. Or by holding it pressed a button a stronger attack is charged as at Beam (beam) is the case. Another special feature is a two-player mode in which both players play the adventure at the same time. Kirby can create a helper for this if he has a suitable ability. This pet has the appearance of an opponent who has the appropriate ability, but has a different color as a differentiator. He is somewhat restricted compared to Kirby, so he cannot go through doors independently and the scrolling of the screen is mainly based on Kirby.

You can choose between six main games, two of which must first be unlocked. All games have a different storyline, opening credits, closing credits and various special features. While one game follows a linear storyline with individual levels, another game offers a coherent, non-linear labyrinth world in which hidden treasure chests can be found. There are also two mini-games and another game that can be unlocked.

The graphic representation of the characters had a major impact on today's two-dimensional Kirby games. In addition, the text content in Kirby's Fun Pak is very high for a Kirby game.

Kirby's Dream Land 3

In 1997 another Kirby platformer was released for the SNES. From a stylistic point of view, it continues the innovations from Kirby's Fun Pak only slightly, instead it is based heavily on the predecessor Kirby's Dream Land 2 , because Shinichi Shimomura was once again involved as director. As with Kirby's Dream Land 2 , Masahiro Sakurai was not directly involved in this game while he was a director on Kirby's Fun Pak .

Since the latest Nintendo 64 console, Nintendo 64 , was already released in Europe when the game was first released and the SNES was becoming less and less up-to-date, it was probably no longer published in this region for this reason, but still in the USA.

The plot is also very similar to its predecessor. Again, Dark Matter is the main opponent, who once again takes control of King Dedede and other inhabitants of the planet. What is new, however, is that Dark Matter can already be seen in the opening credits, while in the predecessor it only becomes visible during the last fight. The opening credits are shown in single frames without comment. In the rest of the game there is almost no text either.

As in the first Kirby games, levels are completed one after the other. The bosses are defeated in order to free them from the influence of Dark Matters, so that a piece of the black mass of Dark Matters is always pushed back from the planet. In addition to eight special skills, a total of six animal lovers are available this time, with new details: Nago , the cat , Chuchu , an octopus , and Pitch , a little bird. The attack technique also changes with these, so that there are more than twice as many possibilities as in Kirby's Dream Land 2 . Furthermore, Kirby can also get down in between, for example to get through a tight spot. If nearby, you can also switch between friends at will.

What has been taken over from Kirby's Fun Pak in a modified form is the two-player mode. However, Kirby does not create a replica of an opponent, but there is a separate figure for the second player called Gooey . In terms of controls and capabilities, there are hardly any differences to Kirby. The screen continues to scroll more strongly with Kirby.

A novelty for all Kirby platformers that have appeared so far is that each level has a special task to be performed by a particular character. Since most of the text is not used in the game, the player must see it himself. For example, be careful not to crush the flowers. Sometimes simple games of skill have to be completed, such as counting different colored figures that can only be seen for a short time. Then you have to answer how many figures of one color were visible. Elsewhere, the juggling stones of a clown that are hidden in the level have to be found. Among the many different characters (at least one different for each level) there are also some cameos , including Samus Aran from the Metroid game. For fulfilling tasks, the figures give one of each Heart Stars ( heart-stars ), only with the help of Dark Matter may end up being truly defeated.

On July 24th, 2009 Kirby's Dream Land 3 was released for the virtual console of the game console Wii.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards

After a Kirby game called Kirby's Air Ride for the Nintendo 64 was announced very early on , but was never published, the first and last stand-alone Kirby game for this console appeared in 2000. The western title is Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards . As in the previously released Kirby's Dream Land 3 , Shinichi Shimomura was the director of the game's development, so the game is based on the predecessor mentioned in many respects and largely dispenses with text. Dark Matter can be seen again in the introduction, but it does not attack Pop Star, but the planet Ripple Star . This planet is inhabited by fairies . Dark Matter wants to increase his power to Fairy Treasure, the powerful crystal (Engl. Crystal ), usurp, so it spreads like on pop star on the planet out. A brave fairy named Ribbon escapes into space with the crystal, but is hit by Dark Matter. The crystal breaks and the ribbon falls on the planet Pop Star. She ends up with Kirby, whom she informs about what has happened and who immediately sets off on a new adventure.

The Crystal Shards (Engl. Crystal Shards ) are distributed alongside Ripple star and pop star still four other planets. On Pop Star, Kirby finds three other allies besides Ribbon for the search. Kirby's companions are a Waddle Dee (used various means like a Lore or cable car ), the art student Adeleine (of her paintings to life) and even King Dedede (can be controlled and destroyed with a hammer obstacles) closes after some hesitation, the group on.

The representation of the environment is three-dimensional , however, like in the previous games, Kirby can still only move on fixed paths to the left and right, sometimes away from the viewer or towards him or in a circle.

The biggest feature of this game is that Kirby can combine several skills. To do this, while he has a special power, he throws a star that represents that ability at an opponent who also has a special power. This creates a star that gives Kirby a so-called power combo . For example, a mixture of ice and stone transforms Kirby into a curling stone , from a bomb and electric into an explosive lightbulb .

In this game, Kirby is voiced by Makiko Ōmoto . She lent him her voice in the 1999 N64 game Super Smash Bros. and is Kirby's voice actress in the follow-up and in the television series .

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards has sold well over 1.7 million times in total.

The game has been available for the Wii Virtual Console in North America since February 2008, and in Europe since March of the same year, followed by Japan in April.

Kirby: Shadows threaten dreamland

In 2002, the year of Kirby's tenth anniversary, a remake of the NES game Kirby's Adventure was released for the Game Boy Advance . In Europe, a Kirby game appeared for the first time under several language-specific names, the German title is Kirby: Shadows threaten dreamland . Nothing has changed in the game's plot, but the graphics and sound have been completely redesigned. In some places minor changes were made to the level design .

The game clearly shows that Masahiro Sakurai was back as director. Stylistically, the figure graphics are strongly reminiscent of Kirby's Fun Pak , and many other features, such as the representation of Kirby's attacks, have a strong impact on the game, so Kirby also wears the hats known from the game if he has a special ability.

In addition to the technical improvements, the most important new feature is the simultaneous multiplayer mode for four players. Four game systems are connected via a link cable, so each player controls a single Kirby of a different color. Another addition are three new mini-games that can also be played by four players.

The game was a success and sold over 2.1 million copies, more numerically than the original for the NES.

Kirby & the wondrous mirror world

Another Kirby game for the GBA was released in 2004. The German title is Kirby & die wondrous mirror world . The game is unmistakably based on the engine of the first GBA game, as is the graphic style, many graphics have been adopted unchanged. This game was not developed by HAL Laboratory, Inc. but by Flagship , a company founded by Yoshiki Okamoto . The director in this case was Tomoaki Fukui from the company mentioned. Masahiro Sakurai had already left HAL Laboratory in August 2003 because, according to his own words, the work there did not give him enough freedom. In the list of contributors at the end of the game, however, he is mentioned as a special adviser.

In this game, which is mirror world (Engl. Mirror World ) of the scene. This world reflects the wishes of living beings, but one day suddenly chaos breaks out in this world. This is due to the power-obsessed creature Dark Mind . Meta Knight flies to the entrance to the mirror world to save it. Meanwhile, Kirby goes for a walk until suddenly a dark doppelganger Meta Knights, Dark Meta Knight , a henchman of Dark Minds, appears in front of him. After a sword attack by him, Kirby is "quartered", creating three additional Kirbies of different colors. Dark Meta Knight immediately returns to the mirror world, and the four Kirbys follow him there. Once there, Meta Knight is defeated by his dark likeness and transported through the corresponding entrance in the form of a mirror to the dark side of the mirror world, where Dark Mind is. Dark Meta Knight then breaks the mirror to prevent anyone from disturbing Dark Mind, and the pieces are scattered throughout the mirror world.

The three kirbys that were created by the attack are basically the same as the three additional kirbies from shadows threatening dreamland in multiplayer mode, with the difference that they can now also operate under computer control. In contrast to the game mentioned, the Kirbys can now move independently of each other in the game world, previously all Kirbys always had to be in the same game segment. Another innovation is a walkie-talkie ( cell or mobile phone ) that every Kirby carries with him. This enables the friends to be called, who then go directly to the caller via a mirror gate.

A major change to all previous Kirby platformers is the non-linear course of the game. With every new start of the game, all Kirbys can be found in one central location. The first mirror doors to be passed through are given, but as the game progresses, the possibilities for the further flow of the game fan out more and more, you have the choice between different paths. So that the entire route does not have to be taken again after each restart, there are switches at several locations that open a mirrored door to the central location. In this way, many different places in the mirror world can be accessed directly from the central location, provided the doors have already been opened. Furthermore, maps, which have to be found first, serve as a guide.

Otherwise, as in the previous games, it is important to find the final bosses and defeat them - in this case there is a shard of the mirror, which represents the entrance to the dark side of the mirror world, as a reward for the victory. The special abilities are again more complex to handle, similar to Kirby's Fun Pak . The treasure chests were also built in from the latter game. In addition to standard objects such as food, these also contain special things such as paint spray (to give Kirby a different color) or music and sounds that can be played in a player who also has to be found first.

In addition to the figures already mentioned, a black Kirby double, Shadow Kirby , Kirby's counterpart in the mirror world, also plays a central role. At first he is an alleged opponent because he believes that the other Kirbys also want to damage the mirror world. However, he turns out to be a friend in the final battle against Dark Mind.

Kirby & die Wundersame Spiegelwelt appeared on December 16, 2011 in the Nintendo 3DS eShop , where it can be downloaded free of charge for first-time buyers as part of the so-called ambassador program . First-time buyers will be compensated because of the sharp price reduction of the handheld in mid-August 2011 by providing them with 20 NES and GBA games free of charge.

Kirby: Mouse attack

In 2006 a Kirby platformer was also released for the Nintendo DS , which was again developed by Flagship, with Tomoaki Fukui once again involved as director. The German title of the game is Kirby: Mausattacke , it is also the last game developed by Flagship, as the company only existed until June 1, 2007. The game starts with Kirby wanting to eat a strawberry cake, but it is stolen from him, and Kirby suspects that King Dedede is behind it. He goes to his castle and after Kirby finds King Dedede there and defeats him, he wants to open the treasure chest in which he thinks the cake is. Then the Squeaks , a group of mouse-like beings, appear and steal King Dedede's chest, which they claim is a fabulous treasure. The real adventure begins, in which Kirby embarks on a treasure hunt against the Squeaks - as in Kirby & and the Wondrous Mirror World, the treasure chests play an important role again. Towards the end of the game it turns out that the real opponents are not the Squeaks, but the Dark Matter, not dissimilar creature Dark Nebula . This was locked in a chest to protect the dreamland.

The graphic style is the same as it was used in the GBA games. Kirby is controlled using the buttons on the Nintendo DS, but the stylus also has an important function. On the lower screen, the touchscreen , Kirby's belly is displayed in stylized form. Special skills and objects can be stored in the stomach, which are located in bubbles and can thus be called up as required. Kirby can also create bubbles himself to make things storable. There is also the corresponding special power, which enables opponents and objects to be enclosed in bubbles so that they can be picked up and stored in the stomach. It is also possible to combine the skills with each other, but the possibilities are more limited than in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards , only certain ones can be combined.

A special characteristic of several special abilities, which was already present in a less pronounced form in some of the previous games, is the influence on the environment. For example, this time it is possible to freeze water, burn plants and dig through the earth.

Kirby Super Star Ultra

At the Nintendo Fall Conference in October 2007, a new Kirby game for the Nintendo DS was presented, the Japanese title of which is Hoshi no Kirby: Ultra Super Deluxe . In June 2008 Nintendo of America announced the US title Kirby Super Star Ultra and the release date for North America, September 29, 2008. In the next month, the date was brought forward by one week to September 22, when the game was played eventually also appeared in North America. It was released in Japan on November 6, 2008. In Europe, the game was released on September 18, 2009, following the localizations required for the local markets.

It is in Kirby Super Star Ultra is a remake of the SNES game Kirby's Fun Pak . In addition to a revised graphics and new, rendered cutscenes , the game features new game modes, in "Meta Knightmare Ultra" Meta Knight, unlike in the original game, is a game piece available. There are also a number of new mini-games for up to four players that use the Nintendo DS touchscreen.

Kirby's Adventure Wii

This game, whose working title is just Kirby or Hoshi no Kirby , was originally planned as a GameCube game, the first pictures were published in 2004. At the game fair E3 2005 further details became known. However, over time it disappeared from the lists for the GameCube games still to be released. In September 2006 , a Kirby game was also listed in the list for future Wii games, which is the former GameCube game. For years, however, there was no clear release date. The year 2007 was given as a possible date, but this was not confirmed. On October 31, 2008, Nintendo announced the year 2009 for release in Japan in its latest financial report.

Similar to Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards , the game will be set in a three-dimensional environment, while Kirby can only move on fixed paths similar to a 2D platformer. The helper system from Kirby's Fun Pak is carried over - this time three helpers can be in the game, which means that four players can participate in the game at the same time.

In early 2011, a preview of a new Kirby game appeared. It was clear early on that this was the game announced in 2005. On November 25, 2011, the title, which had long only appeared on the release lists as "Kirby Wii", appeared under the name Kirby's Adventure Wii. It was developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo. This is a Kirby game with 2.5D graphics, ie a 2D game with 3D backgrounds, which, in contrast to its predecessor "Kirby and the magic yarn", relies on the old strengths of the series. The game can be played cooperatively by up to four players.

Kirby and the Rainbow Brush

Kirby: Planet Robobot

At a Nintendo Direct on March 3, 2016, the next title was announced with the name Kirby: Planet Robobot . The game was released in Japan on April 28, 2016. It was published worldwide on June 10, 2016. It is similar to Kirby's Adventure Wii and Kirby Triple Deluxe .

Kirby Star Allies

At E3 2017 the next title was announced, which was initially only called "Kirby". In September 2017, the title of the game, Kirby Star Allies, was announced during a Nintendo Direct . A demo was released on March 3, 2018. The game was released worldwide on March 16, 2018 for the Nintendo Switch . It is similar to Kirby's Adventure Wii , Kirby Triple Deluxe, and Kirby: Planet Robobot . Around 1.25 million copies of Kirby Star Allies were sold in the first two weeks. By June 30, 2018, the game had sold almost two million times.

Games of other genres

Almost half of the Kirby games can be assigned to other genres. These games often use graphics, characters, pieces of music and other elements from the platforming titles.

Kirby's Pinball Land

Kirby's third appearance came back on the Game Boy in 1993 in Kirby's Pinball Land . But not again in the form of a jump 'n' run, but as a pinball game . Kirby serves as a pinball ball, but he cannot adopt new skills in this game. There are three levels, each of which contains three levels of pinball. In the top level there is a mini boss, through which you get access to the respective level end boss. In addition, each level includes a bonus mini-game. If you have completed all three levels, there is another final boss.

Kirby's Dream Course

In this first Kirby game for the SNES, released in 1994, Kirby was reconnected to a well-known genre, in this case golf . He can acquire special abilities by defeating opponents, which affects the behavior of the "golf ball". The villain is again King Dedede, who stole the stars from the night sky. Kirby's Dream Course is the first Kirby game to have a two-player mode. The second character is a yellow Kirby (Kībī), who looks like Kirby in terms of appearance and abilities, but has a yellow body color.

This game has been available for purchase for the Wii Virtual Console in Japan since April 2007, in Europe and Australia since June 2007 and in North America since July 2007.

Kirby's Ghost Trap

In 1993, an offshoot of the " Puyo Puyo " series (now known outside of Japan as Puyo Pop ), games similar to Tetris , appeared in Japan for the SNES . In Puyo Puyo , the characters are shown in a typical Manga look. To establish the game principle for the western market, however, this did not seem to be considered suitable, so that the game principle of Puyo Puyo was combined with a well-known Nintendo character - Kirby. In 1995, the game Kirby's Avalanche was released for the SNES in the USA , and in Europe it became known as Kirby's Ghost Trap . Kirby's Ghost Trap also has a two-player mode. The gameplay is unchanged, but the pieces of music, texts and a large part of the graphics have been replaced by others. Of course, the background story is also different: the inhabitants of the dreamland organize a ghost trap competition, in which the participants go to the dream fountain and challenge every opponent they meet on their way to a ghost trap duel. The final duels for the winner's cup will then take place at the Traumbrunnen.

This game has also been available for Virtual Console in Europe and Australia since the end of July 2007, and in North America since the end of September of the same year.

Kirby's Block Ball

This 1995 game is a kind of breakout variant. Typically certain blocks have to be smashed in most sections, at the end of each level a boss has to be hit with a certain number of hits. In some places there are opponents whose special power Kirby can acquire, but here only four different in number.

Kirby's Star Stacker

1997 appeared under the name Kirby's Star Stacker another Kirby game in the Tetris style for the Game Boy. Star blocks are enclosed between blocks in the form of the three animal friends from Kirby's Dream Land 2 , in this way as many stars as possible can be collected. By connecting two Game Boys with a link cable, two players can play against each other.

Kirby no Kirakira Kizzu

This game could be downloaded onto a so-called Nintendo Power module from February 1, 1998 . It was possible to load a game onto an empty SNES game module in certain locations in Japan, at a lower price than when purchasing other commercial games. On June 25, 1999, when the N64 had been available for a long time, Kirby no Kirakira Kizzu (カ ー ビ ィ の き ら き ら き っ ず) was still on the market as a regular game. It builds on Kirby's Star Stacker and is therefore unofficially referred to as Kirby's Super Star Stacker . In Japanese, Game Boy and SNES version names are identical. Presumably because of its late release date, this game was no longer localized for the market outside of Japan .

A major change in the game principle is that games against the computer are now also possible. Similar to Kirby's Ghost Trap , the two playing fields are displayed next to each other. In contrast to its predecessor, there is also a plot: The peaceful, star-shaped Mr. Star is shot down and hit by King Dedede with a cannon while flying over dreamland. He crashes and shatters into many small pieces of stars, but Kirby and his friends help him find them again.

Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble

In Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble is one of the few Game Boy games that a tilt sensor (Tiltsensor) use. This makes it possible to influence the game by carefully tilting the basic device - Kirby rolls across the screen depending on how the device is held. The plot says that King Dedede has robbed the dreamland of its stars, which Kirby now has to collect again. In 2000, the game appeared as the only Kirby game specially developed for the Game Boy Color . In Europe, however, it was never officially released.

Kirby Air Ride

In 2003 the only Kirby game for the GameCube , Kirby Air Ride, was released . This is to be assigned to the genre of fun racers . Kirby and other colored counterparts move with special warp stars and other vehicles floating slightly above the ground over the various racetracks. There are a number of opponents cavorting on the tracks that can be sucked in by the kirbys. As usual, special powers can be obtained by swallowing some opponents, which can then be used against the opponents and opponents during the race. In addition to the usual races, there are also special competitions, for example which driver jumps the furthest over a ski jump or defeats the most opponents.

The original version of this game was shown at the 8th Shoshinkai 1996 and was supposed to be released on the Nintendo 64, but that never happened.

Kirby: Power paintbrush

Before Kirby: Mouse Attack , a Kirby game was released for the Nintendo DS back in 2005. The title in German-speaking countries is Kirby: Power-Malpinsel . In the game, Kirby is transformed into a ball that can hardly move on its own by a witch named Malia ( Drawcia ), who has created a world of colors and paintings and has also transformed the dreamland into such a world. However, Kirby comes to the rescue with the Kirby: Power Painting Brush (English : Kirby: Canvas Curse ), which is figuratively the player's touch pen.

Kirby in the form of a sphere cannot be controlled via buttons, instead lines are drawn in Malia's world with the touch pen, i.e. the paint brush, on which Kirby can move. There are other possibilities with the stylus, for example switches can be operated and opponents can be stunned, or Kirby receives a speed boost by tapping or uses a special power.

Other games

The following games fall out of line because they were either not commercially available or because their development was discontinued.

Satellaview games

In the second half of the 1990s it was possible to receive games in Japan with the help of Satellaview , including some exclusive Kirby games. However, these are rather simple, the content of a game is, for example, a reaction test in which a baseball bat is used to hit Kirby or his fellows in ball form at the right moment.

Kirby's Air Ride

Already in the early days of the Nintendo 64, not a little material was published about Kirby's Air Ride , which was to become the first N64 Kirby game. It was initially known as Kirby Bowl 64 , the Japanese name of Kirby's Dream Course is also Kirby Bowl . On the first recordings, Kirby was on a chessboard surface with bumps and depressions, similar to this game. In the later development stage, however, Kirby moves on a warp star through the typically colorful landscapes, a four-player mode was also planned, but the game did not appear. Years later, a similar Kirby game was published for the GameCube under the same name.

KoroKoro Kirby 2

See also section: Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble

Introduced in 2001, this game was to be the successor to Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble . It was planned as a game for the GameCube, with the Game Boy Advance serving as a controller, by moving it the game could be influenced as with the predecessor. It is not known why development was stopped.

Kirby in television and film

Anime

A 100 episode anime series about Kirby was produced. On October 6, 2001, the series was first broadcast in Japan , also under the title Hoshi no Kirby , and in 2002 in the USA on FoxBox (now 4Kids TV ), there under the title Kirby: Right Back at Ya! . The localization for this version was carried out by the US company 4Kids Entertainment , several not inconsiderable changes were made, especially in terms of music, the US version is practically completely different from the original, partly also in terms of content. Many pieces of music in the original are based on melodies from the games, which is not the case with the US version. Some episodes were cut or not broadcast at all in the United States and Canada. 52 episodes were shown in Germany on the Disney Channel ( premiere ) for the first time from November 12, 2003. The German version, whose title is simply Kirby , is based on the US version. For the figures from the Kirby universe, their German names are mostly used.

Since June 23, 2011 it has been possible to watch all German episodes on the Nintendo Wii in the Kirby TV Channel, a Wii channel, whereby both the download of the channel and the episodes are completely free. In addition to Germany, the Kirby TV channel also starts in Great Britain, Ireland, France, Italy, the Benelux countries, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland. The episodes will also be shown in Australia and New Zealand. Four of the 52 episodes and the first episode of the series are shown at the same time, the oldest disappears instead of a new episode. The first one will be permanently visible, the remaining episodes that have already disappeared can be unlocked again using a special key , which can be found directly in the channel. There are two new episodes per week on the channel, on Mondays and Thursdays. Episodes in German can be found in the Nintendo 3DS application of the Nintendo eShop, the Nintendo Anime Channel. The first 20 episodes run there, with new episodes every now and then.

The series tells its own story, but contains the main features of the games. Kirby is a so-called in her Star Warrior (Engl. Star Warrior ), which is intended eNeMeE defeat and his monster to the universe to save them from their reign of terror. The eNeMeE threat poses a threat to the planet Pop Star, as the resident King Dedede is an avid monster lover. He orders monsters via an online monster mail order company from Nightmare Enterprises, NME for short . However, he does not recognize the danger posed by NME, the same applies to his constant companion Escargoon, a snail-like advisor and companion of the king.

Kirby arrives on the planet with his starship , but this actually happens too early because Kirby is (in this series) still a baby. Kirby's best friends become the Tip and Tuff siblings, who live with their parents in the castle of the ignorant king. Meta Knight, who is himself a star warrior, also proves to be a valuable ally. The Japanese original version was published entirely on DVDs , only a few episodes of the US version have been released on DVD so far. Not a single episode of the German version has been officially released on DVD, but the episodes can be watched for free on the Kirby TV channel on the Wii.

Masahiro Sakurai was heavily involved in the development of the anime series.

Movies

In addition to the series, no longer, independent Kirby film has yet been produced. Still worth mentioning is a Kirby pilot film only a few minutes long , which apparently is a kind of prototype of the anime series. This was released on DVD in Japan for the release of Kirby Air Ride , but without providing further background information. In the pilot, Kirby lands on a planet where he meets Princess Fumumodoki , who is not unlike Tip from the anime series and most likely represents a previous model (Tip's Japanese name is Fumu ). They both quickly become good friends. This is what King Dedede, who watches from his castle, doesn't like at all. He never misses a chance to get rid of Kirby, but in all attempts, like Wile E. Coyote , he ends up suffering himself until he finally gives up. But he teams up with Kirby when suddenly more and more evil creatures appear out of nowhere in front of the darkened sky.

In the US, a DVD entitled Kirby: Fright to the Finish - The Movie was released. It is a compilation of the last three episodes of the anime series, which was published as episode 100 of the Kirby series in Japan and the USA. This episode or the film did not appear in Germany.

Comics / Mangas

Comics Kirby's greatest case logo

In issues 3 to 6/1994, a 16-page Kirby comic called Kirby and the Secret of Goo was published in the German Club Nintendo magazine as a sequel. Another 32-page comic titled Kirby's Biggest Case was published as a special edition in 1996. Like the other comics published in the magazine and special editions from 1991 to 1998, this one was specially drawn for Club Nintendo in Japan and is in a corresponding drawing style, so it also falls into the Manga category . Both cases are detective stories , but apart from a few characters, they have almost nothing to do with the plot of the games. Most of the time the action on earth takes place among people. Kirby runs a detective agency together with King Nickerchen (Dedede in the games, known as Nap because of the localization), who is often just called Nick here . As is typical of many detective stories, they receive their cases from attractive human women. A job gives the impetus for an adventure to solve the case. The duo also meets other characters known from the games. An important character that was developed for one of the comics is the blue fish , who helps the two detectives with their investigations, but only in Kirby's largest case , in the first story Kirby is simply disguised as blue fish. A blue fish also appears in a Super Mario comic that appeared in a Club Nintendo special edition for the Game Boy Camera . According to his own statements, both stories were invented by Claude M. Moyse , who was editor-in-chief of the magazine for a long time . According to the legal notice, the drawings come from a Tokyo- based company called Work House.

In a few other comics from Club Nintendo Magazine, Kirby also appears as a supporting character or co-main character. The same applies to the N-Gang comics produced in Germany , which were published in Club Nintendo Magazin in 1999 and 2000.

The longest-lived comic series, the title of which is also Hoshi no Kirby , appeared in Japan in the magazine CoroCoro Comic published by Shogakukan . From 1995 to 2006 the chapters were also summarized in 25 edited volumes. The author and draftsman was Hirokazu Hikawa ( ひ か わ 博 一 , Hikawa Hirokazu ). New Kirby games also brought new stories to the series. The extent to which the mangas are based on the games varies. Most of the figures were taken from these. It is not uncommon for the stories to degenerate into chaotic states. As usual with CoroCoro Comics, typical Manga stylistic devices are often used in a very exaggerated way, such as huge eyes and wide mouths. In this series too, Kirby is mostly with King Dedede.

In Japan, more Kirby mangas by different artists appear to this day, but less often as a complete series. Many of them are Yonkoma mangas, i.e. comic strips made up of four pictures each.

Merchandising

Kirby merchandising appeared very early in Japan - for example a series of plush figures for the second Kirby game Kirby's Adventure . In addition to numerous plush figures, there are also key rings, collectible figures, cards, magnetic figures, food, mangas and much more. There is little Kirby merchandising available outside of Japan. In the USA, some dealers there import articles from Japan. In Europe, however, there are still almost no Kirby merchandise available. In Germany, however, some comics appeared in the nineties .

Places in the Kirby universe

Pop star

On the planet Popstar is Dreamland , the land where most of the Kirby games take place. It is thus the home of Kirby and his friends and also most of his rivals, such as King Dedede .

Mirror world

The Spiegelwelt (Eng: Mirrorworld ) is a world that is connected to Popstar via a portal . It is the setting of Kirby: The miraculous mirror world . It is threatened there by the dark Dark Mind . All inhabitants of this world are shadowy doppelgangers of Kirby, Meta Knight etc.

Material country

Stoffland is the world in the game Kirby and the magical yarn , which Kirby enters through the magic sock. In this world sucking in enemies doesn't work anymore because Kirby is only made of threads. Instead, you use a type of whip to destroy opponents or to roll them up as a ball and throw them at an opponent. This is the place where Prinz Plush and Grimmgarn are at home.

Rock star

Planet Rock Star is a planet from the game Kirby 64 . It is the second planet that Kirby and his helpers explore on their journey. Most of the planet's area is covered in deserts, except for one level that occurs in grass-covered mountain ruins. The explored area of the planet is an ancient landscape of ruins, partly with pyramids (in one level in the background, in another as a kind of station for unknown purposes).

Halcandra

Halcandra only appears in the game Kirby's Adventure Wii and can only be reached with the star cruiser Lor , as he is in another dimension. It is the home of Landia, a dragon and the guardian of the master's crown, and Magolor, who has to be defeated as the final boss in a bizarre intermediate world. The planet consists of a volcanic and rocky landscape. Instead of Waddle Dees, you come across beings wearing metal armor.

Kirby in Super Smash Bros.

In the fighting game series Super Smash Bros. Kirby has been available as a playable character since the beginning. In the four titles published so far, a total of three different battle fields are dedicated to a Kirby theme, in two of which the tree stump stump also plays an essential role. Furthermore, objects such as star sceptres and warp stars can be used by the fighters. In Super Smash Bros. Melee , in which there is the possibility of receiving virtual trophies of various objects from the Nintendo universe, the player can, in addition to various Kirby trophies, also have models of King Dedede, Meta Knight, Rick, Gooey, Waddle Dee and stump stump received. In addition to Kirby, Meta Knight and King Dedede are playable characters in the game Super Smash Bros. Brawl . In addition, Meta Knights airship Halberd is one of the new combat fields.

Most of the attacks that Kirby can use come from Kirby's Adventure and Kirby's Fun Pak .
