The Klopeiner See ( Slovenian : Klopinjsko jezero ) is a lake in Carinthia , Austria , southwest of Völkermarkt , in the municipality of Sankt Kanzian am Klopeiner See . The Klopeiner See represents the remainder of what was once a much larger, post- Ice Age lake, which encompassed the entire area around the present-day village of Kühnsdorf . With water temperatures of up to 29 ° C, it is one of the warmest alpine lakes.

Geological conditions

The Klopeiner See is only weakly flowed through. It is fed only by a few smaller superficial tributaries with little water flow and the groundwater. This makes the Klopeiner See one of the least flooded lakes in Carinthia, which explains the high water temperature. The runoff leaves the lake in the west and ultimately drains into the Drava. The Klopeiner See is 1.8 kilometers long, 800 meters wide and at its deepest point 48 meters deep, the average depth is 23 meters.

Due to the low water flow, the municipality of St. Kanzian am Klopeiner See, as the owner of the Klopeiner See, makes great efforts to maintain the water quality of the lake. The catchment area of the lake has been fully canalized for decades after the lake was biologically "tipped" in the early 1980s. Since 1975, the Klopeiner See has had a deep water drainage system that removes water that is poor in oxygen and rich in nutrients. In this way the depth of the oxygenated water layer is increased. While in the 1930s the circulation currents reached a depth of 40 meters, today there is only a mixing up to 30 meters, which is why technical help has to be given.

The 13 meter deep and somewhat smaller Turnersee is also known for its pleasant water temperatures. It is located about 2 kilometers away near Unternarrach and also belongs to the municipality of St. Kanzian. The Kleinsee is also known among fishermen . This is located northwest of the Klopeiner See.

tourism

The Klopeiner See is used very heavily for tourism, as shown by the hotel and bathing facilities around the entire lake. On the shores of the lake there are numerous bathing beaches, some of which also have a buffet . Most of the bathrooms are private and reserved for guests of the individual accommodation establishments. There are also community-owned beaches that are open to the public for a fee.

The first guests came to Lake Klopein as early as 1885, and there were 40 beds in the vicinity. At that time, the focus was still on curing lung diseases, for example. In the 1920s, the first larger hotels were opened. The tourist use increased sharply until the 1970s. It focused on the three summer resorts of Klopein (north bank), Seelach (north-west corner) and Unterburg (south-east corner). Today, the three parts of the community have largely grown together, with the center of tourist use shifting from Klopein to Seelach due to the available building land.
