LOOKSfilm is a German film production company . It develops, produces and sells documentaries, feature films and series for VoD , cinema and television.

The enterprise

Founded in 1995 by Gunnar Dedio in Rostock , LOOKSfilm produces and sells international series as well as documentaries and feature films for VoD , cinema and television with a team of 30 permanent employees at four locations in Leipzig , Berlin , Hanover and Halle . LOOKSfilm is known for its documentary productions in which history is viewed transnationally . For this purpose, LOOKSfilm has specialized in international co- productions. With the combination of archive material and drama , the historical events are often told about personal fates . The focus of the productions is therefore on international co-productions with historical themes, but nature documentaries are also part of LOOKSfilm's repertoire.

LOOKSfilm also operates its own archive department and a music publisher and is the initiator of event productions and international cooperation with museums , universities , theaters , publishers and broadcasters .

LOOKSfilm has been selling in- house productions as well as selected titles from international producers at its Hanover location since 2011 . The international rights trade specializes in the genres of history and children .

Archive management

In order to authentically illustrate historical events , LOOKSfilm works closely with international archives . In many of the productions, the experiences of contemporary witnesses are told through private documents such as letters and diaries , photo and film material . In 2008 LOOKSfilm founded its own archive department, which also took over the distribution of British Pathé from 2011 to 2016 .

The music publisher of Look movie published since 2007 soundtrack . LOOKSfilm has published music by Max Richter , Laurent Eyquem, Carl Carlton , Ernst Ströer , Eike Hosenfeld and Moritz Denis , among others .

Productions (selection)

LOOKSfilm made their first cinema production with the documentary Henker - Der Tod hat ein Face (2001) by Jens Becker and Gunnar Dedio . The film processed the personal testimonies of the last executioners from Germany , the GDR , France , Hungary , Yugoslavia and Romania .

On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall , LOOKSfilm produced the first documentary series in 2004 in cooperation with ARD , MDR and WDR . Back then in the GDR tells personal stories from everyday life in the GDR. Due to the combination of individual fates and historical precision, the series received the Adolf Grimme Prize in 2005 .

LOOKSfilm has been producing feature films since 2010, such as the Kleist novella Michael Kohlhaas (coproduction with Les Films d'Ici) with Mads Mikkelsen and Bruno Ganz . Michael Kohlhaas received the Golden Iris at the Brussels Film Festival 2013 . The film screened in 2013 in the competition at the Cannes International Film Festival (category “Best Film”) and in 2014 won the French César film award for best sound and best music. Michael Kohlhaas received the rating of particularly valuable from the German Film and Media Assessment .

Further productions for the cinema were made in coproduction with Les Films d'ici in Paris: The Wild Farm by Dominique Garaing (2010) and Michel Petrucciani - Life Against Time (2011) by Michael Radford, which was part of the 2011 Cannes Film Festival's official program ran. In 2014, the documentary Von Caligari zu Hitler by Rüdiger Suchsland was made , which had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival and has since screened at more than 30 international film festivals.

14 - Diaries of the First World War (2014) was the first German series to which Netflix acquired US license rights . The series tells the story of the First World War from the perspective of fourteen people. For series production, film and photo material from 71 archives and 21 countries as well as private archive material was used and this was combined with drama scenes. The series was one of the most elaborate docu-drama formats ever co-produced in Germany and was sold in more than 25 countries around the world before it was broadcast. The stylistic narrative style of the documentary drama series was established in this production and has shaped the narrative style of LOOKSfilm ever since.

War of Dreams (2018) is the continuation of 14 - Diaries of the First World War and another series production about the path of Europe in the 20th century. War of Dreams tells the time between the world wars based on 13 fates. The series wasvoted one of the top ten most popular German series of all time in Rolling Stone magazine. With a total budget of over 10 million euros, it is the most complex LOOKSfilm production to date.

LOOKSfilm produced a documentary drama series for children in 2014 with Little Hands in the Great War (2014). The follow-up production Der Krieg und Ich (2018), which tells eight children's fates during World War II, was awarded the 2018 Golden Sparrow .
