Laurentius Fabritius (* around 1535 in Uerdingen ; † July 22, 1600 in Cologne ) was auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Cologne .

Life

After completing his studies , Fabritius received his doctorate as Dr. theol. and from 1582 was chaplain of the bishop-administrator of Münster, Johann Wilhelm von Jülich-Kleve-Berg . Here involved in the implementation of the Tridentine reform demands, he became pastor at St. Remigius in Bonn after the resignation of the administrator in 1585 , but resigned to this position as early as 1587.

From September 26, 1585 to 1587 canon at the St. Cassius Monastery in Bonn , on December 1, 1587 he succeeded Auxiliary Bishop Theobald Craschel as pastor at St. Alban in Cologne. Even for already on 23 March 1588 Titular Bishop of Cyrene and appointed auxiliary bishop in Cologne, he received in Cologne on August 7, 1588 by the Nuncio Ottavio Mirto Frangipani the episcopal ordination .

After Laurentius Fabritius had donated the episcopal ordination to the prince-bishop of Paderborn, Dietrich von Fürstenberg , in 1589 , he became canon in Cologne on October 16, 1592 . Since his official acts repeatedly ran counter to the Tridentine demands, between 1592 and 1599 he was repeatedly threatened with impeachment by the Pope and the Nuncio. Here, however, he was able to rely on the protection of Archbishop Ernst of Bavaria .

He founded a Latin school (today's Fabritianum grammar school ) in his hometown of Uerdingen and was buried in Cologne Cathedral after his death .
