Lazar Ćirković ( Serbian - Cyrillic Лазар Ћирковић , born August 22, 1992 in Niš ) is a Serbian football player in the position of a defender , who is used in particular as a central defender .

Club career

Career start in Niš and Belgrade

Lazar Ćirković was born on August 22, 1992 as the son of a professional basketball player and a language and literature teacher in the Serbian city of Niš. In his childhood and youth he appeared for the youth teams of FK Filip Filipović Niš (until 2004) and the major club FK Partizan Belgrade (2004 to 2008). In 2008 he moved to the youth department of FK Rad Belgrade and made the leap to the professional team of the club in 2011. After he sat on the bench of the professional team for the first time in a competitive game on March 5, 2011 in the 3-0 away win over FK Čukarički and also kept the bank in the following games, he made his professional debut on April 23, 2011 . In the 1-1 home draw against FK Spartak Subotica , he was substituted on by coach Marko Nikolić in the 84th minute of play for Nikola Leković . Only one round later he completed another short assignment in a 2-0 away defeat against FK Vojvodina , in which he received, among other things, the yellow card . There were no other professional league appearances this season , which FK Rad finished in fourth place and qualified for an international starting position for the second time in the club's history.

In the 2011/12 season he sat under the brief coach Slavko Petrović in the first two games of the season without use on the bench. The rest of the time he belonged to the reserve and only found again in November and December under the new coach Nebojša Vignjević back in the professional squad , but had to remain without a competitive game this season. In order to collect at least some match practice, he was awarded for the spring of 2012 to FK Palić with play in the third-rate Srpska Liga Vojvodina . At the club, which had barely managed to stay up in the previous season, he made seven championship appearances and one goal. Also this year the relegation was achieved. In the final ranking of the SuperLiga, FK Rad took tenth place in the table this time. After five different coaches had looked after FK Rad since he left in May 2011, Marko Nikolić returned in March 2012 as head coach of the workers' club. Only in the 2012/13 season should Ćirković break through under the coach, under whom he had made his professional debut at the time.

Breakthrough at FK Rad Belgrade

In this season he was used in the first four games of the season as a regular for the full 90 minutes in central defense and on the right side of defense. After that, he hardly made any league appearances over a period of around two months and was mostly unused on the substitutes' bench before he was often on the pitch again from the beginning of November for the entire duration of the game. From spring 2013 at the latest, Ćirković was again the undisputed regular player on the defensive, in which from then on he was used exclusively as a central defender. In 22 league appearances, he came on a record of a goal and an assist, where he received a total of four yellow cards. In the Serbian Football Cup 2012/13 , in which he and his team were eliminated just 1-0 in the quarter-finals against eventual cup winners FK Jagodina , the tall defender made two appearances. With 44 points, Rad was at the end of the season with a seventh place higher up in the league, but slipped further and further in the table in the following 2013/14 season .

The 1.92 m tall central defender, who had made 24 goalless league appearances for him personally this season, had to go into relegation with the team at the end of the season and was very lucky to have managed to avoid relegation prematurely. In the relegation, Rad only secured himself in the second leg - after the first leg against FK Metalac ended 0-0 - with a 3-0 win to stay in the league. Ćirković started the season under Nebojša Milošević and also played under Nebojša Petrović , Aleksandar Janković and Stevan Mojsilović during the 2013/14 season . In the Serbian Cup 2013/14 the premature exit took place in the first round match against the second division club FK Borac Čačak . After his defensive performance attracted attention and was mainly courted by national clubs, Marko Nikolić, now a coach at the traditional club Partizan Belgrade, brought him to the same place in the summer of 2014.

Moved to Partizan Belgrade

On August 20, 2014 - Ćirković had already started under the new coach Milan Milanović in the 2014/15 - he signed a four-year contract with the Belgrade team . The change should have taken place a few weeks earlier, but this failed due to unclear contractual conditions. The arbitration tribunal of the Serbian Football Association then approved the move on August 19, 2014. On September 13, 2014 he sat unused on the bench in the league game against FK Čukarički for the first time in a competitive game by Partizan and five days later made his competitive debut for the Belgrade big club when he played against Tottenham Hotspur (0-0) in the Europa League group game ) was on the field from the start and up to the 68th minute of the game. After that, the 22-year-old was almost without exception a regular in the Belgrade defense line until the winter break of 2014/15 and played in a total of five of his team's six group games in the Europa League group stage. At the end of this group stage, the team retired from the tournament as the last in Group C.

Started as a regular in spring on February 21, 2015, the defensive line, which was temporarily suffering from health problems, had to make way for the more experienced teammates in the squad from the following championship round. It was not until the end of the season that Ćirković made four championship appearances in May 2015 and ended the season with the team in first place in the table with seven points ahead of their closest rival, the city rivals Red Star . This secured the team a place in the 2nd qualifying round for the 2015/16 Champions League . In the Serbian Football Cup 2014/15 , the team reached the final and lost it just 0: 1 against FK Čukarički. In total, Ćirković was used in 13 league, three cup and five Europa League games this season.

Under Zoran Milinković , who had been the coach since the end of March 2015, Ćirković was only used sporadically as a central defender at the beginning of 2015/16 and often sat on the bench without being used or was not part of the squad. In the Champions League qualification, he was used in both games of the second qualifying round against FC Dila Gori and was then only an unused substitute. In the further course of the tournament, the team made it through the third qualifying round in the play-offs, which were decisive for participation, in which Partizan was narrowly defeated by BATE Baryssau due to the away goals rule and then took part in the group stage of the Europa League 2015/16 . After he had only made six league appearances by the end of October, he became a regular on the defensive in November and was regularly used by Ljubinko Drulović , who had just taken over from Milinković as coach.

After he had missed the first three group games up until then, he was also in the three other Europa League group games as a central defender on the field from the beginning of November. In the end, Partizan Belgrade took third place in Group L - tied with second-placed FC Augsburg - and thus retired from international competitions prematurely. In the last championship game of the year, plagued by injuries, Ćirković was one of the injured players that evening; after that he did not play any more competitive games until the end of the season due to injury. With 28 points behind the unbeaten FC Red Star Belgrade this season in the league, Ćirković was Serbian runner-up with Partizan. It was more successful for the capital club in the Serbian Cup 2015/16 , in which Partizan made it to the final and defeated FK Javor Ivanjica 2-0 there. Overall, Ćirković was used in the 2015/16 season in 13 league, two cup, two Champions League qualifying and three Europa League games.

Further titles with Partizan and move to Switzerland

Under the former international Ivan Tomić , who had taken over the black and white coach at the end of the year and also started the 2016/17 season with the team , Ćirković was not considered. Since he was not allowed to play until the winter break of 2016/17, he was initially not considered under the well-known Marko Nikolić, Tomić's successor. But even after that, with the start in spring 2017, he did not make the breakthrough into the professional team and, if he was part of the squad at all, sat on the bench without commitment and had to let his teammates go first. Only in the penultimate game of the season, a 3-1 away win over his home club FK Radnički Niš , did the central defender play his only competitive game of the season on May 17, 2017. After 31 unbeaten championship games in a row, he again won the Serbian SuperLiga championship title with Partizan at the end of the season, with the team three points ahead of their pursuers and city rivals Red Star. The steamroller , which is the club's nickname , was similarly successful in the 2016/17 Cup , in which Partizan defeated the Red Star 1-0 in the final and was able to defend his title.

After Nikolić had finished his second term at Partizan at the end of the season, Miroslav Đukić, a new coach , took over the team. Under this, the 1.92 m tall defensive man also started as a regular player in the 2017/18 season , but had to give up his original position again after appearances in three of the first four championship games and subsequently only acted as a substitute player, before even from mid-September no longer belonged to the professional team. He also played all four of his team's qualifying games for the 2017/18 Champions League . Furthermore, after the team was eliminated from the CL qualification, he sat in the two games of the qualifying play-offs for the 2017/18 Europa League against Videoton FC , in which Partizan met his last coach Marko Nikolić, without minutes only on the bench. Ćirković was in the squad for the last time in a competitive game for Partizan on December 7, 2017 in the last group game of the Europa League against Dynamo Kiev .

On January 23, 2018, after almost five years with Partizan, the Serbian’s move to the Swiss first division club FC Luzern was announced. In the Inner Swiss , he signed a contract until the summer of 2018 with the option to extend for another two years. According to the sports coordinator of Lucerne, the former professional player Rémo Meyer , he should strengthen the line of defense for the Swiss and, if necessary, be used as the new defense chief of FC Luzern. On February 18, 2018, the defensive line made its debut in the Super League when he was substituted on by coach Gerardo Seoane in the 1-1 away draw against FC Zurich in the 67th minute for Walerian Gwilia . He then became a regular on Lucerne's defensive team before an injury that overtook him on April 7, 2018 in a 1-0 away defeat against FC Thun threw him off the rails. Due to a torn inner ligament on the left ankle , Ćirković had to end the season early. Despite his injury, the club expressed their confidence in him and a few days later extended his contract, which expired in the summer, for a further three years until the summer of 2021. After he had undergone an operation and his condition had not improved sufficiently by the summer of 2018, the Club known that the Serbian will be out of play for an indefinite period and will therefore not return to the team at the start of the 2018/19 season .

Ćirković played his first game after his injury on September 29, 2018 in a 3: 3 home draw for the second team of FC Luzern against SC Zofingen . On October 20, he was already on the bench again in a professional league game without a mission and after another game without a mission on November 1, he was used from the start in the 2-0 away win in the Cup eighth final against FC Chiasso by René Weiler , who had replaced Seoane in the summer break, in the 79th minute in return for Lucas . Three days later he played a game in the Swiss Super League for the first time in seven months in a 2: 5 home defeat against FC Zurich.

National team career

Ćirković gained his first experience in a youth national team of the Serbian Football Association in 2009 when he made his debut for the Serbian U-18 national team . In the following year he also played for the U-19 national team of his home country, before playing for Serbia's U-21 for the first time in 2013 . He made his debut on February 6, 2013 against his colleagues from Israel , when he was substituted on by Radovan Ćurčić in the 83rd minute for Miloš Jojić . After a further appearance in a friendly against Greece in June 2013, the defensive player played in two qualifying matches for the U-21 European Championship in 2015 in October and November 2013 . He completed another such mission in October 2014 in the play-offs against Spain ; In between he was often an unused substitute for the U-21 national team. After another friendly against Italy in March 2015, he played the U-21 European Championship in the Czech Republic with his home country .
