List of countries according to traffic fatalities
The following list sorts countries according to the number of people who have died in traffic. The number of traffic fatalities per 100,000 inhabitants and the number of traffic fatalities per 100,000 motorized vehicles are also given. Motorized vehicles include passenger cars , heavy vehicles such as trucks and buses, as well as two-wheelers such as motorcycles or scooters .
In 2016, according to official information from the individual countries, 629,365 people died in traffic worldwide. The total number of road deaths estimated by the WHO is 1,323,666.
The country with the most road fatalities worldwide was India with 150,785 people. According to WHO calculations, 299,091 people died.
The number of road deaths per 100,000 inhabitants is a good example of the country in which it is most dangerous to participate in road traffic. Liberia had the highest rate of road deaths with 35.9 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. In Liberia it was around 9 times more dangerous than in Germany in relation to the probability of being killed in traffic . In the USA it was around three times as dangerous as in Germany. In Germany it was again about 1.3 times as dangerous as in Great Britain . The country with the lowest value in the world is San Marino, where there were no road deaths in 2016.
The number of fatalities per 100,000 motorized vehicles provides information on the safety of vehicles and routes, the driving ability and willingness of drivers to take risks, as well as the quality of the rescue infrastructure and accident medicine. In Guyana and Togo there is one traffic death per year for around 120 motorized vehicles, in Germany the figure is one traffic death for around 17,000 vehicles.
Of all road deaths across Germany in 2016, 48% were motorists, 19% motorcyclists or scooters, 15% pedestrians, 6% unspecified pedestrians and 12% cyclists. Worldwide it was 38% car drivers, 20% motorcycle or scooter drivers, 26% pedestrians, 11% unspecified passers-by and 5% cyclists. Overall, 77% of all road fatalities were men. Most of the accidents with fatalities occurred in low- or middle-income countries, while the rate was much lower in rich countries thanks to better protection measures and infrastructure. Germany , Austria and Switzerland are among the countries with the highest road safety in the world.
Traffic accidents are the eighth leading cause of death worldwide, ahead of AIDS , tuberculosis and diarrheal diseases .
Ranking list
All information comes from the Road Safety Report 2018 of the World Health Organization and applies to the year 2016. It should be noted that some information comes from estimates or updates and that there may be national differences in the definition of road deaths. For example, China officially reports exactly 58,022 road deaths in 2016, while the WHO estimate is 256,180 deaths. The figures in the table below are based on the official information provided by those responsible in the individual countries and on the estimates of the World Health Organization.
