Here you can find a selection of current and former private libraries , sorted by surname. Historical private libraries have had a checkered history; they have been inherited, given away, offered for sale, sold, etc. Numerous historical private libraries are now part of a library, museum or other institution. Many private libraries owe their existence to a pronounced passion for collecting, bibliophilia and devotion to certain topics, but also to erudition. An organization is u. a. the Private Libraries Association . Important institutions for collectors include a. Auctions ( Sotheby’s etc.), antiquarian fairs, second-hand bookshops , etc., there are also online second-hand bookshops such as ZVAB , Antiquariat.de etc. The private libraries also include royal private libraries of royal families such as the royal library in Windsor Castle .
