Autocephalous churches
Five main patriarchates are in Alexandria , Antioch , Constantinople , Jerusalem and Rome . These were the most important Christian dioceses in the 6th century. As the center of Eastern Christianity, Constantinople is of particular importance (honorary primacy within the Orthodox church hierarchy). The position of a patriarch is not comparable to that of the Pope , who recently (2006) renounced the additional honorary title of Patriarch of the West. The seat of the Patriarch of Antioch is in Damascus. There are currently nine Orthodox patriarchates. The patriarchs preside over the respective churches, they exercise jurisdiction and are elected by the bishops.
