List of mines in Clausthal-Zellerfeld
The list of mines in Clausthal-Zellerfeld contains an overview of the mines , tunnels and shafts in the vicinity of the mining town of Clausthal-Zellerfeld in the Harz Mountains .
The mining of silver and lead in the formerly independent towns of Clausthal and Zellerfeld was operated by Benedictine monks at least since the 12th century . Zellerfeld was the first town to receive city rights in 1529 and mountain freedom was granted in 1554. It was only through the establishment of the Upper Harz water shelf that the particularly rich ore deposits of the Burgstätter gangway could be exploited, since a natural water solution via a hereditary tunnel was not possible due to the location of the pits on a plateau. The last mines in Clausthal-Zellerfeld closed during the Great Depression in 1930. Until 1980, the former shafts were used to generate energy from hydropower .
The list does not claim to be complete.
