Mömpelgarder Altar: The calling of Matthew / The meal with the tax collectors

The Mömpelgarder Altar is a pictorial sermon about the life and work of Jesus Christ . The altar, built around 1540, consists of a central shrine and three movable pairs of wings with a total of 157 pictures that can be read like a book. The images were designed to designs by the theologians Kaspar Gräter from Mr. Berger Renaissance - painter Heinrich Füllmaurer based on the Bible translation of the reformer Martin Luther from the year 1522. Based on the data in the four Gospels are passed down through Jesus Christ, came as a harmony of the Gospels .

The original of the altar is currently in the Kunstkammer of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna . On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation , the Evangelical Church Community of Herrenberg had a transportable replica made in 2015 as part of the theme year "Picture and Bible", which is located in the Herrenberg Collegiate Church on the tower gallery.

history

Construction of the Mömpelgarder Altar with numbering of the "Viennese Count"

The winged altar for the parish church of St. Maienboef (today Montbéliard in France ) was commissioned around 1538 by the regent of the County of Mömpelgard, Count Georg von Württemberg . The altar, completed around 1540, came to the ducal art chamber of Duke Friedrich I in Stuttgart around 1600 . After the lost battle of Nördlingen in the Thirty Years' War , the altar and the art chamber of Ferdinand III. brought to Vienna to the Habsburg collection.

Heinrich Modern first mentioned the altar in 1896 in the “Yearbook of the Art History Collections of the Very Highest Imperial House”. Using a scheme he designed, also known as the “Viennese Counting”, he numbered the panels from 1 to 157 and provided them with descriptions.

The creation of the Montbéliard altar and the Gothaer panel altar was only in 1971 by the art historian Werner Fleischhauer clearly Heinrich Füllmaurer attributed to be. Heinrich Modern named Hans Leonhard Schäufelein as the painter for both altars in 1896 .

Design of the altar

The altar made of spruce consists of a central shrine and three pairs of wings. The center picture in the shrine is 98 × 91 cm and is bordered by 12 smaller pictures on three sides. The individual wings measure 185 × 101 cm and contain 12 pictures per side, which are arranged in 4 rows with 3 pictures. The total of 156 small pictures are each 41 × 28 cm.

The pictorial representations are supplemented by corresponding Bible verses. These texts are written on white text fields, which are framed by golden leaf ornaments, are placed in the upper third of the panels and make up an essential part of every picture. Underneath are medallions adorned with tassels , which contain information about the appropriate chapters from the four Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles . In some pictures only one scene is shown, often there are two or more motifs in one picture: a main motif in the foreground and smaller scenes in the middle or background. The 157 pictures thus contain more than 250 individual scenes. The story of the passion and the crucifixion are depicted in the center shrine of the altar .

The replica

The modern replica of the Mömpelgarder Altar

In 2010 the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) started the “Theme Year” campaign on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in 2017.

In 2015, the basic idea for the reconstruction of the altar was developed in the Krauss agency in cooperation with the Evangelical Church Community of Herrenberg as part of the “Reformation - Image and Bible” theme. The former First Mayor of Herrenberg, Helmut Maier, laid the substantive foundation stone through years of intensive preparatory work on the early reformation altar by Gräters and the workshop of Füllmauer. Reproduction was possible, not least because the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna approved all images.

The altar was designed and implemented by the Krauss agency and the Böblingen advertising technician Ulrich Jehle. The replica invites you to linger, touch and, thanks to the ingenious advertising technology, also to turn the page.

The transportable replica can be loaned to other locations.
