Sebastian Alexander Machowski (born January 18, 1972 in Berlin ) is a German basketball coach and former national player . He is currently the coach of Polski Cukier Toruń in Poland .

Career

player

Machowski comes from the successful youth of TuS Lichterfelde Berlin, who at the time was a cooperation partner with the Bundesliga club Alba Berlin. In 1991 he became German A-Youth Champion with TuS Li . In the following years he played with a double license in the 2nd basketball league with Lichterfelde and in the BBL with Alba. In 1995 he was in the Alba squad for the Korać Cup win, the first international basketball success of a German club team. Before Alba was to win his first national championship and cup titles, he moved to Telekom Bonn, who had been promoted to BBL in 1996. National titles in Germany with his following teams should not succeed him in the following period. For the junior national team, he took part in two European Championship finals. With the men he was not considered for a final squad.

After two years with Bonn, he went abroad in the 1998/99 season, but only had short-term contracts, so he played for three clubs that season. With Virtus Roma in Italy and the Basque club from Vitoria , two of the most renowned addresses in European club basketball were also there. A year in Dunkirk ( France ) was followed by a one-year engagement in Athens ( Greece ) before returning to Germany in 2001 for record champions Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga. After a year he switched to Mitteldeutscher BC within the BBL, with whom he won the FIBA EuroCup Challenge in the second year . He is the only player who was involved in the first two title wins of German club teams at European level. The MBC went bankrupt in the course of the season and Machowski first signed a contract in Jena in the second division for the new season . In December of that year he moved back to the Rhine and was signed by the first division club Cologne for four weeks. At the beginning of 2005 he signed a contract in Poland , where he let his playing career end in Zgorzelec and Kołobrzeg .

After the end of his time as a professional player, he occasionally strengthened the senior team of the DBV Charlottenburg and celebrated successes at the national level with the club's over 35s.

Trainer

During his engagement as a player of Kotwica Kołobrzeg Machowski was appointed coach when the old coach was dismissed. He was able to successfully pass this test, so that from the 2008/09 season he only acted as a coach on the sidelines. The second season ended with success in the Polish cup competition and his first title win as a coach. He was then offered the opportunity to return to the BBL at the New York Phantoms Braunschweig as the successor to Emir Mutapčić , his former coach at TuS Li . With a newly formed team, Machowski succeeded in his first year with eighth place in the table after the main round, the first qualification for the play-offs for the German championship for the Braunschweig club after a seven-year break. In the first round of the play-offs, after an opening defeat, the main round first and reigning title holder EWE Baskets Oldenburg could be eliminated with three wins in a row. In the semifinals, they finally lost to the future champions Brose Baskets from Bamberg. In the following season you could confirm the upward trend and reach a good fifth place after the main round. In the play-offs they were eliminated in the first round 2 to 3 against the Artland Dragons from Quakenbrück.

In March 2012, the club announced that Machowski had turned down an offer to extend his contract and that he would leave the Phantoms at the end of the 2011/2012 season. Just a few days later, EWE Baskets Oldenburg announced that Machowski had signed up for the 2012/2013 season. He received a contract in Oldenburg until 2014. Machowski led the baskets back to the top teams in the league and reached the play-off final, but lost 3-0 to the reigning champions Bamberg. For this season performance, Machowski received the award as coach of the year in 2013 , awarded by the basketball league. In April 2014, Machowski's contract was extended to June 2016. The new contract also contained an option for another season. On March 23, 2015, Machowski was released early after his club had suffered several defeats and revealed tactical weaknesses in the games in question.

On March 1, 2016, the Bundesliga club Eisbären Bremerhaven announced the engagement of Machowsky as head coach. He received a contract until the end of the 2015/16 season. After leading the team to relegation, Machowski received a new two-year contract in Bremerhaven in May 2016. After only two wins from the first 13 games of the 2017/2018 season, Machowski was released from his duties as head coach in December 2017.

In September 2018, Machowski became assistant coach of the Chinese team Shenzhen Leopards . In July 2019, the Polish first division team Polski Cukier Toruń announced that they had hired Machowski as their new coach.
