Malmeneich is the only district in the municipality of Elz in the Limburg-Weilburg district in Central Hesse .

geography

Malmeneich is located on the southern edge of the Westerwald . Accordingly, the Malmeneich forest is very hilly. The lowest point is east of the village in the Malmeneicher forest by the lakes at 140  m above sea level. NN . The highest point is in the south of the district on the elevated reservoir , which supplies Elz and Malmeneich with water, at 290 m above sea level. The place itself is on average at an altitude of 250 meters.

In the north the next place is Hundsangen (already Rhineland-Palatinate ), in the west the next place is Obererbach (also already Rhineland-Palatinate). In the south Malmeneich is closed by the "Bacheberg", as the Malmeneich call the small hill on which the children go sledding in winter. The district borders in the east on Niederhadamar , in the south on the main town Elz and in the west and north on Rhineland-Palatinate. The district is comparatively small and has a belt of agriculturally used area around the place as well as smaller forest parcels in the south and west that merge into the Elzer and Niederhadamar forests.

Malmeneich is on the federal road 8 , which is called "Hohe Straße" in the village.

history

Malmeneich is mentioned for the first time in a manuscript of the Eberbach monastery from 1225 as "Madelbodeneich". This name is associated with Mallobaudes , a Frankish king from the 4th century.

Politically, the place belonged to the Niederlahngau before it was first mentioned , then to the County of Diez . A customs house on Hohen Strasse in Malmeneich is documented for 1305. Rights and possessions owned various churches and monasteries in the area as well as the respective lords of Hadamar and the Counts of Katzenelnbogen . In 1564 the place was divided in the Diezer Treaty between Kurtrier and Nassau-Hadamar . From 1803 the place was reunited under the new Duchy of Nassau .

On December 31, 1971, Malmeneich was incorporated into the municipality of Elz in the course of the regional reform in Hesse .

School history

Up until 1883, all Malmeneich children went to school in Hundsangen, at times also partly in Hundsangen and partly in Hadamar. After that, they first rented a classroom in Malmeneich for 40 children. Lessons later took place in the dance hall of the Malmeneich restaurant "Reichsadler" (today "Zum Bergisches Land"). In 1895 a school house was built. During the Second World War, the Malmeneich children went to Hundsangen again. In 1966 the primary school in Malmeneich was closed. Today the Malmeneich children go to primary, secondary and secondary school in Elz. To attend a grammar school, they usually go to Limburg or to the Fürst-Johann-Ludwig-Schule in Hadamar.

Buildings

Chapel of St. Nicholas

The chapel was probably built in 1213 and belonged to the Hundsangen parish for centuries. Elements of the Romanesque architectural style can still be seen on the building . In the chapel dedicated to St. Nicholas , there is a small bell on the tone d from the 15th century. In 1953 the chapel was expanded. Before that, the church measured 10.2 by 5.9 meters; it was expanded to 13.7 by 5.9 meters. In addition, a choir measuring 5.8 by 4.7 meters was built in front of it. In 1971 the chapel was assigned to the parish of Elz.

Hohe Strasse 7

Despite the original windows that have been changed by renovations, this small-format half-timbered house stands out due to its very regular framework. On the upper floor, the pronounced man forms are striking . The building, which dates back to the 18th century, faces the old trade route that dominates the area.

Kapellenstrasse 11

This former monument no longer exists today. It was demolished in the late 20th century and replaced with a double garage.

The former residential and guest house was remarkably large for the place. However, due to the plastering, the framework was no longer visible in the middle of the 20th century. The two- and three-part structure of the windows on the upper floor, which was still preserved at that time, indicated a baroque half-timbered structure. The plastered cornice revealed rounded wooden fillings. The knee stick and the hip roof were built in the 19th century, as was the outside staircase with a canopy.

Kapellenstrasse 18

This relatively little changed house is a typical example of a residential house of the small-format Hofreit that once shaped the place . The two-zone building with a massive basement and upper half-timbered storey was probably built at the beginning of the 18th century and has discreet decorations with fire rams and nested S-struts on two sides . The ceiling on the ground floor is also built using a beam construction with clay infills. The cellar ceiling is only partially preserved in wooden beam construction. The house has a crawl space with two rooms.

The barn that exists today was built later and is not a listed building. In 1964, a connecting building in solid construction was built between the house and the barn. The substance of the house was also changed by relocating the entrance and adding a vestibule. In 1978 a double garage was built next to the building, and in 2000 the house was completely renovated.

Waldstrasse 16

This oldest largely preserved half-timbered house in Malmeneich is dated to the 17th century. However, renovation work has largely destroyed the framework on the ground floor. Above this, a simple framework with dense stands and correspondingly small compartments can be seen. Apart from the profile of the threshold to the upper storey carved out on the eaves side, there are no architectural decorations. Shortly after 2000, this monument was extensively renovated.

Economy and Infrastructure

Most Malmeneich work abroad. There are only a few jobs in Malmeneich. The only operations are a tree nursery and a motorcycle workshop .

The Malmeneich volunteer fire brigade (founded in 1957), with a youth fire brigade since September 9, 2006, provides fire protection and general help.
