The list of the team cadres of the German Chess League 1980/81 contains all players who have played at least one game in the German Chess League 1980/81 .
The tournament regulations allowed the 16 participating clubs to register 8 regular players and up to 12 substitute players, but by no means all registered players were used. The Sportfreunde Katernberg managed with 9 players, most of the players played at least one game at SV 1920 Hofheim and Favorite Hammonia , 13 each. A total of 176 players were used in the 1980/81 season, 60 of whom did not miss a match.
A club was allowed to field two foreigners per competition, but not all clubs made use of this right. With the Englishman Stephen Berry (SV 1920 Hofheim), the former Soviet world champion Boris Spasski , the US-American Lubomir Kavalek (both Solingen SG 1868), the Czechoslovak Vlastimil Hort (SG Porz), the Icelandic Guðmundur Sigurjónsson (SG Porz) and Jón Hálfdanarson (Delmenhorster SK), the Dane Jens Ove Fries Nielsen (Favorite Hammonia), the Swede Harry Schüssler (SG Bochum 31), the New Zealander Murray Chandler (Hamburger SK in Hamburger SV) and the Israeli Israel Zilber (Königsspringer Frankfurt) became a total of 10 foreigners used this season.
The most successful player was Murray Chandler, who scored 12.5 points from 15 games on the top board of Hamburger SK in Hamburger SV, while Solingen top player Boris Spasski, Frankfurt Jürgen Haakert and Bochum Dirk Paulsen scored half a point less . With Klaus Tschauner from Munich and Oswin Heider from Hofheim, two players achieved 100% of the possible points, but both had only a few appearances; Tschauner was set up three times, Heider once.
Favorite Hammonia put in Luis Martin-Sommerfeldt (* 1964) both the youngest and Herbert Heinicke (1905-1988) the oldest player of the season.
