The Metro Station Merkur Gaming Arena / Messe Nord (proper spelling Metro Station MERCURY GAME ARENA / Messe Nord ) is an above-ground subway station in Düsseldorf district Stockum between the fairgrounds and the Merkur Gaming Arena and was in September 2004 Put into operation. At the moment, only the U 78 light rail line ends in the spacious station, which is designed to accommodate the large number of visitors at major events in the stadium or the trade fair .
history
The underground station was completed in 2004 at the same time as the multifunctional arena in Düsseldorf and the new north entrance to the trade fair. Associated with this was the relocation of the final stop of the U 78 line, which previously ended at the Messe / Rheinstadion stop not far from today 's Sportpark Nord / Europaplatz underground station .
The arena train station passed its first endurance test on September 10, 2004, when Fortuna Düsseldorf won their first regional league game in the new arena 2-0 against 1. FC Union Berlin in front of a record crowd of 38,000 spectators.
Like the adjacent stadium, the subway station has also been renamed several times. The current name is MERKUR SPIEL-ARENA / Messe Nord , the former names were Arena / Messe Nord , LTU arena / Messe Nord and ESPRIT arena / Messe Nord .
Station complex
The arena train station has three tracks and three elevated platforms , the arrangement of which is a special feature in the Düsseldorf light rail network: there are platforms on both sides of the northern track A, which enables simultaneous getting on and off - also known as the Spanish solution . In this way, however, the times of the trains in the station and thus the number of vehicles used can only be reduced when the exhibition is bypassed . There is currently a turning loop southwest of the station .
The platforms can be reached from both ends of the arena train station via stairs, escalators and elevators. At the north-eastern end, the north entrance to the exhibition center is above the tracks. At the other end, the southern entrance to the arena extends over the tracks. The station roof rests at a height of 12 meters on 48 pillars and is 12,000 m² in size, of which 4,000 m² are made of glass. The construction costs amounted to 37,300,000 EUR.
traffic
The Arena-Bahnhof is at the end of a branch of the first main tram line and the former D-Bahn and is currently the terminus of the U 78 tram from / to Düsseldorf Central Station , which is operated by the Rheinbahn with B80D trams in triple traction at events in the Fair or arena and otherwise operated in double traction.
For events at the trade fair or in the arena, up to three bus lines also serve the arena train station.
