history

Beginnings on the Theresienhöhe (1964–1998)

Historical logo of Messe München GmbH

The Munich Trade Fair and Exhibition Company (MMG) was founded on April 1st, 1964 at the Theresienhöhe in Munich . A total of seven trade fairs took place in the first year, including bauma , electronica and Bau . MMG gained international fame with the 3rd International Transport Exhibition (IVA) in 1965. In 1967, the bauma construction machinery trade fair was privately owned by MMG. In the following decade, new events established themselves almost every year on the exhibition grounds, including today's leading trade fairs ISPO , CBR (today: f.re.e) , transport logistic , drinktec , Inhorgenta , Laser World of Photonics and productronica . In the 1980s, MMG began expanding its activities abroad and acquired the International Trade Fair and Exhibition Service (IMAG) . Soon, despite continuous expansion, the hall capacities of the exhibition no longer offered sufficient space for the number and size of the events, so that MMG moved to the former airport site in Munich-Riem .

Munich Trade Fair Center in Riem and international expansion (from 1998)

The New Munich Trade Fair Center (today: Munich Trade Fair Center) was opened on February 12, 1998 in Munich Riem with twelve halls. Architects were Bystrup, Bregenhoj + Partners, Kaup, Scholz and Jesse + Partner. In 1999 the trade fair founded the Bauzentrum Poing, a permanent home exhibition.

In the new millennium, subsidiaries were founded in China , India , Brazil , Russia , South Africa and Turkey . The first subsidiary abroad, Messe Muenchen Shanghai Co., Ltd. , was founded as part of Messe München's participation in the construction of the Shanghai New International Expo Center (SNIEC) , which opened in 2001 . The first international bauma , bauma China , also took place in Shanghai a year later .

In 2001, 2004 and 2018 the exhibition center in Munich was expanded by two exhibition halls each. As the last construction phase of the plans from the 1990s, the expansion of the Conference Center North (CCN) began in 2016 and was completed in December 2018.

The gross exhibition area of the total of 18 halls at Messe München comprises a total of 200,000 m² of exhibition space, plus around 414,000 m² of open-air space, which is by far the largest open space of all trade fair companies in Germany.

In the exhibition area there are exhibition halls, the exhibition center, the exhibition tower, the Conference Center North and the International Congress Center Munich (ICM) .

After the fair moved from the city center to the former airport area in the Messestadt Riem (1998), the fair company has one of the most modern and sustainable exhibition grounds in the world and was certified in 2008 by TÜV Süd as an “energy-efficient company” . One of the largest rooftop photovoltaic systems in the world is located on the roofs of six exhibition halls . In addition, the entire exhibition grounds are heated by the geothermal system from Stadtwerke München . By using renewable energies, Messe München saves more than 8,000 tons of CO 2 every year . In October 2019, it was announced that from 2020 onwards, Messe München's power supply will be entirely based on renewable energy.

The press center built for the 2006 World Cup was also located on the exhibition grounds. Michael Käfer , Alfons Schuhbeck and Josef Able have been running the restaurants and snack bars on the exhibition grounds since August 2015 .
