The middle ground is next to west route and Ostweg one of the three north-south long-distance hiking routes through the Black Forest . It leads from Pforzheim to Waldshut . The approximately 230-kilometer high trail was laid out in 1903 and has been maintained and looked after by the Black Forest Association ever since . His signpost is a red diamond with a white bar on a white background.

From Pforzheim the route first leads to the plateau between Enz and Nagoldtal . Passing the high moors of the northern Black Forest , it goes to Freudenstadt and on through the Middle Black Forest via Fohrenbühl and St. Georgen to the Hochfirst . In the southern Black Forest, the Mittelweg goes through the valleys of Schwarza and Schlücht (western route) or Mettma (eastern route) and reaches the Upper Rhine near Waldshut .
